Yes Three Houses basically had this, they just gave you "S rank" for the one you picked. But I'm at the prologue for now and I'm getting the gist of what's gonna happen mechanically so yeah I have to agree it's unlikely to feel the same. It's fine, if the characters are good, artists and writers will fill the void.

Apologies it seems I stepped on a social landmine here, and I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. I didn't expect my perspective to be controversial, where to me the yuri manga I read are lesbian.

I think you mostly stepped into an evolving trend. Yuri is a genre with code, it's not just lesbian manga, that's part of why there was that whole "My manga isn't Yuri" thing with "The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy At All", even though it has a canonical wlw relationship in it.

But I also think that's sort of changing? People can publish professional level manga online way more, often tag or brand it as yuri and the breadth of topics and style has massively increased. On top of that whether they claim the label or not, that stuff is often grouped together with the rest of the Yuri. I think the term is going to evolve, because the main reason for its stability was traditional publishing and there are alternative now. That being said, it's never going to be 1 to 1 either, plenty of Yuri will keep it to subtext regardless of evolution.

Yes Ryuko & Mako is one of my favourite ships. Funny cause usually I much prefer the rivals/enemies to lovers to the wholesome friends to lover tropes but even before I arrived at the episode that reveals (SPOILER ALERT) the relation between Satsuki and Ryuko, I still didn't ship them as much as Mako and Ryuko. I guess Mako's insanity makes up for how wholesome ships aren't usually my favourites xD

They don't use bait to mean subtext per se, they use bait to mean that they have personally been baited by non explicit yuri, I guess they're technically correct even though that's not the previously known usage of the term.

Not uncommon considering the similarities between Asami and Lust. I've often read Asami was inspired (visually) by Lust, but as far as I can tell, it's a false rumor that has been debunked.
