It's not a retcon it's an alternate history. A small change that threw off the timeline. You don't play as Byleth but Byleth and Edelgard are both part of the story.

Hard to say. Pre-timeskip the age difference is 22/23 to 17/18 but the major issue is that Byleth is Edelgard's teacher more than the age gap itself.

Post-Timeskip, Byleth didn't really age (and not in a "I'm an immortal dragon so I still look young" way but in a "I blinked and woke up 5 years later" way) so they would both be around 23 years old. In game you can only form romantic relationships with the characters once they're years past being your students but this is fanart hence why I don't know xD

Shit, that's a very good point, the issue is that I'm not recruiting any student for that playthrough because I want maximum Drama beside Lysithea and only because you can recruit her post-timeskip (so she's technically not a student anymore) but you're making me consider it.

@SushiKnight: I think it's the Nissa x Chandra that's the controversy since I read they try to un-make the paring in a book to make room for one of them to be straight-passing in a new show (don't quote me on any of this, it's all second hand info) after having them declare their love for each other previously.

Either LGBT women specifically funneled into Black Eagle (Female lord, biggest amount of available wlw) or it's a result of women generally being waaaaaaaaaaaaay more likely to romance the Lord of their house than men no matter who that Lord is, perhaps for story reasons. It's possible that this increased likelihood of dating the Lord extend even to straight women choosing Black Eagle. Most likely a combination of both factor though.
