Oh wow, I missed that completely, sorry! Now I feel like a dope.

Nah, it was all me. I fudged the setup.

For the record, I'm at least somewhat aware of intra-UK politics and know that it's not ok to mix up a UK citizen's specific nationality unless they're Welsh.

Also, am I really the first US citizen in the thread?

Yes. I don't even live in an English-speaking country. x)

I really doubt you're the first in the entire thread. I'm pretty sure I commented earlier and I'm American't too. And there's probably plenty of others as well around here somewhere.

Just so you know, we're not in the UK either, unless you're Northern Irish. Saying you're Irish is usually a shorthand for being from the Republic/south.

We are a complicated little country

Discounting the possibility that this is some kind of grammatical blue/yellow dress thing, as an (American) native English speaker the sentence made perfect sense and it never even occurred to me it could be confusing.

Part of the confusion might be that the pattern "I haven't even ~" is, at least in America, a common expression that (as PLG talks about) in context is immediately understood to express regret (or possibly exasperation) about whatever comes next.

Yup, there are others.
And yes this story follows a familiar pattern, but I really like it.

I know Malibu's American too so, so far, we've got three Canadians, four Americans, one Irish, Ropp and her non English-speaking country.

Nice to confirm there's English speakers other than American and British ppl.
I hope no one's too shocked.

I have met fans from Norway and Sweden, Germany, France, India, etc who speak and write English better than many from English speaking countries. They are truly wonderfully talented people who speak and write multiple languages. I feel so lacking because I speak one,(barely), and fail so bad at speaking and reading Japanese. I envy these people.

Japanese is one of those languages that make sense when you know what it means, but if you try to explain it, it sounds really damn weird, lol. I did my best. >_<

Ah the joys of a language structured to be low-context.

Japanese: Because we've been doing centuries of subtext

What's it like reading novels in Japanese without the handy pictures for context?

You still get all the context you need through the text. If something would be vague without proper context, then context is given. Despite how it may seem, Japanese is actually very logical and easy to understand, once you grasp it. It's just like how even in English, a fluent speaker can easily understand "caveman speech", or people with bad english, because so much of "proper" English (and many languages in general) is superflous. If you see someone on their driveway washing their car, and ask them what they're doing, the answer "I wash car" would be 100% understandable, even if it sounds awkward and is grammatically wrong. A lot of grammar is simply there because it always has been. For example, the word "the" is almost always superflous, because context makes it obvious whether you're talking about cars in general, or a specific car.

I talk too much when it comes to language... :p

H-How do you value your what you contribute of to at the workforce?

Yeah, even the crazy broken English that we hear from non-native speakers is still understandable. I don't nitpick their language until they try to write formal documents... People who nitpick over my shoulder as I type get stitches.

Just when you thought there was no other way to misinterpret a sentence.

Don't you just love the English language?
