Forum › Forum Post Formatting - Basic Markdown Tutorial

This post is made to help Dynasty Forum users understand how they can format their messages.
The formatting is based on Markdown language, though there are some small differences - for example, you cannot insert HTML code blocks, but can mark spoilers.
The syntax is relatively simple. You can just quote this post to see how it's made.

This is a header. It starts with #

This is a 4th level header. It starts with ####

There are some horizontal lines here...just write *** at start of line to make it.

This is a code block. It starts with 4 spaces

This is code span. We usually use it for tags. It's surrounded with `.
Take notice that ` and ' are different symbols, you need the one that's on the left of 1 key on standard keyboard.

  • This is a list
  • You need to start each line with * and a space

  1. This list is numbered.
  2. Start each line with number period space
  3. Number order doesn't actually matter, shown list will be same

This is a quote. Start it with > and space

This is a nested quote

Just add more > for extra levels

This is a spoiler. It is surrounded with == . Mouseover to see the text inside. Please actually use it when talking about some important plot points.

This text is in italic. It is surrounded with either * or _ This text is in bold. It is surrounded with double symbols, either ** or __.

This is a hyperlink. You need to surround link text in [], and link target in ().
Also, if you insert raw http address (starts with either http or www) or e-mail, it will become a hyperlink
http://dynasty-scans.com
random@email.not.really

Image is similar, but you need to start with ! And text doesn't really matter.

Don't forget to add some spaces or lines to separate elements - and to remove them for correct formatting. If you mess up, you can get stuff like this:
** this block won't become bold because of extra spaces ** But this one will

Please tell me if I forgot something, I'll add it.
Don't forget to Preview your post to be sure.
Repeating what I've already said, just click on quote to see how this post was made.

This should really be a sticky. The "Suggestions for Improvement V2 + FAQ " thread does say how to use spoilers but it's in the middle of a bunch of unrelated stuff plus the FAQ part being at the end makes it really easy to miss that it might have the information you're looking for. Plus there's no clear indications anywhere (that I've noticed at least) how you can figure out all the markup code.

Second the recommendation for being a sticky. Thanks for posting this, it's tremendously helpful.

Also note that if you don't care about adding link text, you can just post it raw without the brackets and it'll be clickable.

Thank you. Been meaning to do this for the longest time. Will make a sticky some time later.

This information will be utilized in FAQ v3 if you don't mind not being the OP. Converting this to a FAQ would be a bit more of a hassle getting things organized.
We preferably don't want too many stickies on at once when it's not recruiting season.

Edit: Scrapped.

If you're doing it as a FAQ, maybe instead of my suggestion of having a stickied rules post (as suggested here ) roll the forum rules into that rather than have too many stickies.

Oh, of course it's better to have staff-made official sticky, this one was made only because there isn't one.
Though I somewhat disagree on second point - IMO it's better to have separate stickies for separate things, rather than join them together.
Obviously having 10+ stickies taking over half of first page is overkill, but ~5 well-structured major ones won't be harmful.
Because, well, if you have low number of threads, it means that each thread is cluttered inside instead.

^ I think it still could work though. They can consolidate everything in a single thread but have them arranged on multiple posts per topic.

This just my opinion though, they can just "lock" the FAQs thread so that it wouldn't go all rubbish again, then just create another one (or we can just continue using the current one) for the discussion/suggestions/whatever concerning the FAQs/whatever. Then all "official" things will just be posted by mods on the locked thread. I think two stickies wouldn't hurt.

I don't understand, what about that is how to grade BASIC?

Simple, if you try to submit this to your teacher as a BASIC program you'll be marked down.

I mean seriously. No line numbers, no GOTO loops, I bet this wouldn't even run.

BASIC: The very foundation of spaghetti code. Not to be confused with The Flying Spaghetti Monster.

110 IF this = that THEN 120
115 GOTO 130
117 that = this * theother
120 RTS
130 this = theother + 3
133 GOSUB 327
137 GOTO 117

Sorry about that; it was nostalgic.

Well, as long as you don't change forum language to something like Brainfuck...
Or Lisp. Please, I don't want to count parentheses.

How do you add a picture?

Put a ! and the link to the pic in brackets immediately after it.

PLEASE keep it in moderation and try not to post large images. We don't have a resizing function here so they can easily dominate the page.

Cheat Sheet

Here is a quick cheat sheet of the markdown.
It's ordered according to what I think is the most frequently used.
The format is simply the code followed by the result, except for a few that needs to be explained in words.

> quoted text

quoted text

Note that a line directly under a quoted line will also be quoted. This often results in accidentally quoted text.

> quoted text
text that isn't meant to be quoted

quoted text
text that isn't meant to be quoted

To avoid this, put a blank line after the quoted text.

*italic* or _italic_
italic or italic

**bold**
bold

**_bold and italic_** or __*bold and italic*__ or ***bold and italic*** or ___bold and italic___
bold and italic or bold and italic or bold and italic or bold and italic

~~strikethrough~~
strikethrough

==spoiler text==
spoiler text
Note to self:
Had to use an invisible character in the first line, because == cannot be escaped properly with a backslash, such that it ended up being displayed like this \==.

The following is for a link with no custom label.
Just put an address/URL that starts with www, http:// or https://.
www.example.com
http://example.com
https://example.com
example.com --> Note that this doesn't work because it doesn't start with any of those.

[link with custom label](http://example.com)
link with custom label

***

The above was a horizontal ruler.

0. Numbered list item
0. Numbered list item

  1. Numbered list item
  2. Numbered list item

Note that the line above the first list item must be blank. Also note that the number you put doesn't actually matter; it will always enumerate 1, 2, 3...

* Unnumbered list item
* Unnumbered list item

  • Unnumbered list item
  • Unnumbered list item

Note that the line above the first list item must be blank.

`tag`
tag

[4 SPACES HERE]code block

code block

Note that the line above the code block line must be blank.

# heading 1

heading 1

## heading 2

heading 2

Alternatively, you can make a heading 2 by putting a - on the line below the text.
heading 2
-

heading 2

### heading 3

heading 3

#### heading 4

heading 4

Warning: Overuse of headings might result in beheadings. Use at own risk.

Wouldn't bold, italic, spoilers and regular links be most regularly used?

The four headers all look identical.

You can increase the size of text (but smaller than header text) by adding "-" on its own to the line below.

I've stated this elsewhere, but don't abuse the header tag. It's seriously annoying and breaks up the readability of a page.
