In Japanese folklore, moths represent the souls of the dead.

Edit: I need to expand this. In Japanese folklore moths are represented as the souls of the transmigrated dead. In most stories where they feature, the moths are either saying farewell to their loved ones, or are discharging karmic obligations to the living (unresolved actions, emotional baggage, or life lessons).

I didn't fully understand, so it's mysterious, intriguing and sad. Nice.

It was pretty sad, but it felt too short for me to be truly devastated. After finding out that the month represents the souls of the dead, it definitely hits harder though.

well, Valeria returned sword in hand asking if Conan wanted to live forever, and ex-GF chan retuned as a moth to apply lesbian physics to rescue the MC. Simple as. It's not sad, it's legendary.

Still less sad than the animated short with a similar plot you could find in the Ice Age DVD extras
