marimite and now strawberry panic, yay
Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the anime.
No remake huh?
I'm a big fan of Marmite and SP along with fan works. Saying that this was just bad. Looked like it was made in MSpaint and the story was nothing.

Funny thing, The anime almost completely rewrites the novel story. For instance these to run together and not the blue haired girl. Also there are a lot more people competing and it has various events. Even a rescue event on horseback.

god i LOVE the light novels. fifty billion times more fun, and shizuma's writing in it felt a lot more realistic too. plus it had a siscon tomboy that i think a lot of people would appreciate
anyway! this was cute. i kinda laughed at how fast the pacing was, and it's true that the art skill level is pretty low, but the expressions were cute and the premise itself was sweet. plus, i mean, 2006? god damn

Really? I find the novels to be the weakest version of the story. I found Shizuma in it to be pretty bland and the overall development between her and Nagisa was a bit ehhh to me. Also, I much much much prefer the ending of the anime over the novels.
For me it goes anime > manga > novels

i wasn't a fan of the anime's melodrama i guess. everything felt cheapened by it? the "oh we've got to delay the resolution a little longer? okay sudden amnesia (from a horse riding injury) (and she immediately gets back on said horse)" was too much lol. the LNs were dramatic but leaned more into the school politics and interpersonal "history", which to me gave the relationships more depth.
also, as for shizuma herself, in the LNs it's like she's stretching her last bit of freedom before graduating into a much more suffocating world. she knows her status and is actually responsible (just playful and a little eccentric). she's accepted her fate and closed off her heart. this is why nagisa (an outsider to this walled garden) is who she truly falls for, but when nagisa pushes her away, she disappears and resigns herself to it. the scene where nagisa rushes to meet her before she gets onto a flight was so, SO GOOD. peak romance.

Fair enough. I can see why that would be more appealing; to me, however, Nagisa rushing to meet her before she gets onto the flight etc., while good, kind of falls flat because what she ends up doing is pulling Shizuma back into that "walled garden".
Like, it still does the same thing as the anime with how it kind of rejects the typical Class S type of relationship and accepts that sapphic love isn't something you just graduate from, but in the anime this is done by the soon-to-graduate Shizuma, who no longer really has any duties to the school, choosing to barge in on the Étoile ceremony and her and Nagisa running away from the "garden" whilst in the novels it's done by stopping Shizuma from doing her "duties" as a woman and bringing her back into the school, not as Nagisa's Étoile partner, but as her romantic one.
Both work but I just like how the anime handles it better.
Shizuma's trauma about Kaori, her crossing lines (including the SA), her attitude about how none of the things she does really matter because what happens in the school isn't "real" (or at least that's how I read her) all just work for me. Also, since the anime spends more time developing their relationship it makes the ending work better for me.
(I also prefer how the anime handled Tamao. Her having to come to accept that her love for Nagisa is unrequited is very tasty and I like that the anime leans into it in the way it does.)
Holy moly why is there so much writing
Because we've all had 20 years to stew on this and it's embedded in our brains forever. Like, I still mourn the total disappearance of a Strawberry Panic parody video from 2007 called "Shizuma's Guide to Getting It On".

yeah this is one of those "agree to disagree" situations. it's interesting though because i've never spoken with someone who read the LNs but still preferred the anime, so thank you for sharing!

yeah unfortunately tamao was my least favorite character so the anime's focus on her was also a sour point for me. i'm glad you enjoyed it though
WOW! First Marimite and now StoPani! What year is it again?

This is actually the third Strawberry Panic upload this year. Though the other two were sadly Tamao x Nagisa
