One person dying first is the norm for relationships between two humans too, this really isn't any more bittersweet than that.

IMO the bittersweetness in this kind of relationship is that one of them's life is so long she's going to live for another hundreds of years before she dies (if she even does). It's a bit like owning a pet that have an avg. lifetime of 10 years, you're going to mourn them long after they passed away, except romantic rather than pet-owner relationship.
