One person dying first is the norm for relationships between two humans too, this really isn't any more bittersweet than that. I'm sure they had many wonderful years together.

The woman on the right is wearing the modern uniform of ama divers, a traditional culture of women divers who dive deep without scuba or air tanks to catch food, pearls and other natural sea bounty. No wonder one of them would meet a mermaid.
