Everyone here in USA understands what 10th grade means, but it's much more common to say sophomore.
Freshman - 9th grade - 3rd year junior high
Sophomore - 10th grade - 1st year high school
Junior - 11th grade - 2nd year high school
Senior - 12th grade -3rd year high school

Here in the USA, junior high is technically 2 years, and high school is technically 4 years. Depending where you are they may split it as 2 years and 4 years, or as 3 years and 3 years. That's why it's always one of my pet peeves when 1st year high school gets translated as freshman.

I'm wondering if the author was referring to the real historical events, instead of what can happen in the game or in the anime, because they sunk almost togheter in the midway battle during the WWII ( the Akagi aircraft some hours before the Kaga), seems more like before death memories.... However it's really sad... :(
