Edit: Also considering that Shenhe's clothing has a lot of white, the artwork can get very confusing and jumbled to look at.

yeah, in fairness to KyoAni they created Dekomori and they gave her and Nibutani their first kiss on-screen and KyoAni doesn't actually do a lot of boy girl kisses on screen. I think it's more wish fulfilment -we know how compelling KyoAni characters were - I hope they can keep that culture going - and we want our ships on-screen. Yui is clearly gay, and Azusa at least acts like an at-least-bisexual classic tsundere to her. Very similar to Tora in ToraDora, even.
