^^ For what is worth, tuxedo with skirts are a thing, they aren't common, but they do look just fine, if the issue is the frilly skirt, you can sub it for a pencil skirt just fine for a more mature look.

Plus Ayukko's stories do have them married and living together as teenagers, one story even had Madoka instinctively respond when the teacher called out "Akemi", only to remember that she is still legally "Kaname"(homosexual marriage isn't legal in Japan, sadly, so their marriage isn't official) and would go by such at school.

...except they kinda are? Hayate literally built Reinforce Zwei and raised her from what the Wolkenritter describe as "like a baby". As for power imbalance, it's a little odd, but Hayate certainly outranks Rein and has more magical power than her. The fact that she has military rank suggests that she's legally considered an independent person and not a possession (Raising Heart and Bardiche don't get ranks!), and it's certainly implied by Agito that she's not dependent for her existence on Hayate's mana (like a familiar would be) but the whole situation is tricky.

Hayate certainly sometimes acts like she thinks she's Rein's mother, but then she seems to think she's Signum's mom, so who knows.

^^ Unfortunately part of it is that Japan is still kind of bad about homosexual acceptance, and even as much as having Rika be openly a lesbian is a massive step forward, when before even miss Homura "Literally-So-Gay-She-Made-Her-Girlfriend-Into-God-And-Became-The-Devil-Through-Sheer-Force-Of-Gay" Akemi had to wait until Rebellion and until the character had a ridiculous amount of clout behind her to be allowed to openly state her feelings as romantic...

Stuff like Rika & Ren's Christmas version is already pretty far along... which I take it as them being canon at that point, their Magia is literally powered by them holding hands, after all, at some point the subtext just becomes text.
