Megumi is essential for understanding the journey toward love and open-heartedness that Tomoko begins in the series. I can't stress this enough. The conclusion of the Megumi story marks a moment of self-awareness that resonates forward for our sad mess of a heroine. If you miss the series from ch. 20 on, you in some ways miss the series.

And there's no shortage of cringe later on.

Agreed. Megumi was a turning point. Megumi showed care for Tomoko at her lowest point, and we know those small kind gestures stuck with her and convinced her to be a better person which they show she's been making an honest attempt to be.

it surprises me when people are adamant in skipping the earlier parts of the story. There's this thing called character growth and overarching themes, guys. That's why the later chapters are so satisfying, we see Tomoko grow as a person and better herself through her experiences.

Oh god I remember this game. It wasn't fantastic but I won't say I didn't enjoy it.

...and I can't deny that I bought it because of the promise of yuri.

Bugpope is 100% right though. Nobody would have known about these games if it weren't for that.
