I tried but I just can't follow this. It'd probably help if I knew what it was based on.

It is based off of Maria Watches Over Us. It was at one time basically the flag ship for the shoujo ai genre and single handedly brought back the class S genre. It has 4 anime seasons and something like 38 LNs.

It is so weird reading something based before so much of the commonly known source material was out.

Also, introduced "Gokigenyou, Onee-sama!" and "You should tie your scarf in a proper knot."

I guess we're just getting old.

Getting nostalgic here BTW. I really miss Yumi and the Yamayurikai.

There is a really good fanfic called Keeping future that currently has 14 chapters. It is about Yumi and Sachiko after Sachiko graduated. Personally I think the writing is good enough to of been part of the original story. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6815115/1/Keeping-Future. If you want something more for the story.

I've always love Drill Girl and Yumi's interactions. Thank you for this. Should rewatch again

I look at MariMite as something of a period drama. All the specific, codified manners they have to follow, certain modes of dress and address, the way that some relationships are communicated subtly, and so forth. It's really enjoyable when I look at it as an anachronism like that.

That, and Marimite also lacks many of the annoying tropes its later imitators would commonly have. For example, imagine there being some kind of Sachiko-sama fanclub that were constantly harassing Yumi at school.

As a story it is a lot more interested in the characters and how they interact, less so in things happening outside of their control, which I can appreciate.

Not constantly, but there was a moment during the treasure hunt when Yumi was hounded by girls who wanted a date with Sachiko.

Yes but I was talking about malicious intent. There is virtually none of the usual "you are not good enough for Sachiko-sama" type of bullying, tacks in her shoes, books thrown away type of thing you see all too often. It would probably clash with the period feel Nezchan was talking about above, granted. That does not make it any less refreshing to be spared of almost all antagonism in the entire series however, be it by peers or relatives.

In fact, there is only one volume, or one episode of the anime, I can recall where the latter group does try. At that point though Sachiko and Yumi's relationship is already too strong to break with such petty tactics, and the whole thing ends up playing so beautifully that it honestly is one of my favorite parts of Marimite. Such a great turning point moment after the preceding drama in the series, and the first time that Sachiko and Yumi felt like equals really.
