Actually according to the director they were females, just tomboys.

From what I read of the interviews, he said he had to compromise with the animator, Kojima, so he drew them as boys with girly features. I didn't read anything about them actually being girls.

Is she hiding behind a speech bubble that says that Dia-san is pretty? Or is it something else?

2nd game ramped up the gay between these two but after playing the pc version of bayo1 i never realized how gay it actually was. guess luka not being in two as much makes a difference

They are left ambiguous but they are intended to be tomboyish girls.
