Also Shaft would be a poor choice for Kakegurui. The reason Shaft's works are like that was because the source material itself was surreal to begin with, and so their particular way of animating goes well with that surrealism. Speaking of which, I'm still eagerly waiting for the confirmation of who Fate/Extra's protagonist will be.

^ Not really. Arakawa Under the Bridge as well as Sangatsu manga were not surreal. Shaft just adds their flare.

That is just how Shaft animates their shows. When they can't put a lot animations, instead they make each shot as dynamic and memorable as possible. Or even if it isn't time and money issue, that is just their style of animations.

I could wax lyrical all about the yuri moment in Volume 6 of kakegurui. The way her relationship with the president was focused on itself was great since it was set up much earlier than the actual competition: at the start of the previous match with the idol before the "president" left. The gambling this time around is also unique in the sense that it's not an easy black vs white scenario like the others where the student council member is either too crazy or too deplorable in their goals or too much of a jerk that you obviously will still cheer for Yumeko; it's easier to cheer for Sayaka compared to the others due to the fact that her reason for wanting to win doesn't necessary target Yumeko to make her miserable (the initial bet was just for the council's sake) and also because Sayaka is much more normal compared to the other eccentric student council members. Then there's the buildup, the flashbacks, using that particular flashback before she said her last words before jumping. There's also the fact that if you think about it, there was no point to this entire gamble and it's pretty certain that the president knew Sayaka was going to lose (hinted at early on), but she also had enough faith in her to still pick the "right solution" at the end (also hinted at); therefore the only possible reason (at least so far) that the president did all this was to show Sayaka why she liked her to begin with by making her make that final decision. No normal person would do things like this but it's certainly something that president would do based on how she was characterized, so it makes perfect sense. There's so many layers to it and it's accompanied by great art. A+ amazing yuri.

I'll be honest... its basic storytelling, and easily noticed given that the characters themselves do a lot of that exposition, maybe too much.

The moment she found that lily flower i knew how things would end regardless of what was happening

I get that, although I think saying Arakawa Under the Bridge isn't surreal is pretty odd though. The humour and characters of that show were plenty surreal to me.

...Implying that basic storytelling and having layers to the story beyond the telling of the story are somehow mutually exclusive...? Or somehow because the ending was easily telegraphed based on how everything was built up somehow makes it lose depth too. I really find some rather head-scratching stuff here sometimes.

I guess I was thinking about how the manga is presented. The storytelling & the art style are all pretty straightforward, so I don't consider it surreal. But yeah, the setting is pretty nonsensical. Then again, it's a comedy. Maybe Nisekoi is a better example than Arakawa.

Trying to say that there was not as much going on (layers), and that there was too much exposition for what little there was (besides the convoluted game/gamble). But hey, it's just me and my ramblings again.

Just read Kakegurui.

It was... okay.

I was disappointed. I guess it was my fault to get hyped reading commemts of how amazing it was.

The side yuri was meh at best. Nothing too much praise worthy like Yuri Kuma or Flip Flappers.

The only thing i could praise is that author of this manga can make good hentai. The expression of every character in manga make me uncomfortable like i was reading hentai entire time. Props to author for that.

I guess i need somerhing normal and less crazy after this.

Idk. I love them both. While Flip Flappers was cute to no end, Yuri Kuma stings your heart.

It seems you took that one negatively, so I suppose I apologize. I wasn't being sarcastic though, it is pretty amazing how one goes to the idea of hentai when shown ranges of different over-exaggerated facial expressions; it wasn't intended as a slight against you.

So you were talking about my problem with faces rather me not liking the manga?

On topic- When you are on Dynasty-scan, a few months are enough for you to point out what kind of faces girls make during romance, kiss, sex. And straight up lewd hentai/porn.

If you try to compare the faces in hentai and face in these manga during matches, they are very similar. You can search on google for any hentao face and put this manga during matches, then you will see what i'm talking out. Most of these over-exaggerated facial expressions are looks like taken from a hentai doujin.

Hmm, the new Kobayashi episode feels kind of off? Animation-wise, they over-animated Elma I think. Made her too over-the-top in her reactions and how it was animated. At least as far as I recall she didn't have such extreme reactions, art-wise. Could be misremembering though.

Kanna with her hair down was adorable though. I hope they include that particular thing more often. All-in-all a pretty nice episode, besides from feeling a bit off.

Yuri Kuma was ok, But Flip Flappers has to be one of the best Yuri anime I've ever seen hands down.
