Regarding Ghostbusters, Sony has announced they will definitely be making sequels. i imagine any follow-up would be free of the need to spend time on cameos and callbacks to the original, which would only be a Good Thing.

So many good, landmark films from the 80's. The Empire Strikes Back (best one of the whole series that I've seen, i.e. not counting III and VII), Labyrinth (ft. David Bowie's codpiece), The Neverending Story, Airplane! (which I just learned this week was a shot-for-shot remake of an older film), Die Hard, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, and the list goes on.

Really impossible to pick a favourite.

Well... I only discovered the 80s in the 90s as well... so... but I always loved Blade Runner and Aliens.
And of course stuff like Terminator, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Gremlins, Poltergeist, Scarface and Star Wars as well.

@Blackkitty True that. Well, it's always going to the parties later, drinking half of what others drink.. it's a long process.

Gonna stay away from talking about movies, since I know jack squat about those.

Thing about Blade Runner is it was great, but the best version didn't come out until way later with the Director's Cut.

@Nezchan I'm a staunch believer of the book, no cut of Blade Runner will convince me otherwise.

Eh, the novel and the movie are different animals, far as I'm concerned.

Woah... it's been ages since I've last seen Labyrinth...
I don't really remember much but I think I liked it back then...
The Never Ending Story and Stand by me were two of those movies I watched all the time when I was a kid. Well... they were on TV all the time so there was no way around those ;)
I don't think that I've ever watched Airplane! before but I definitely will! ^^ Just watched a trailer and that one seems hilarious.
Same goes for The Princess Bride.... wow, I've spotted Mandy Patinkin in that trailer... ^^ gosh was he young back then... well, it's been almost 30 years so I guess that's to be expected... ;)

When I watched Blade Runner for the first time the Director's Cut was already out.
I just adore that movie. There's nothing that really compares.

@Nezchan Well, it just seemed to me like the movie lost the charm and the meaning of the original. It's not like Blade Runner is a bad movie, but I just found it to be a bit underwhelming having read the book before.

Then again, my media is books and not movies, so I may be horribly wrong.

@Anon99 Airplane! is a good movie, makes me wonder about rest of Leslie Nielsen's movies.

Jesus, now I really do feel old since I lived through the 80s as a teenager. But I would put Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, Terminator and Full Metal Jacket near the top of the pile for greatest 80s movies.

As for Labyrinth, nothing beat seeing Jennifer Connelly in the ballroom scene for the ultimate "Girl Next Door" who was drop dead gorgeous, with the possible exception of Phoebe Cates in Fast Times At Ridgemont High (and only because she got nude).

I really liked Full Metal Jacket, ignoring the second part of the movie, which was a bit dull in comparison.

As far as Leslie Nielsen is concerned I know The Naked Gun, of course ^^
But Airplane! seems to have fallen through the cracks somehow...

@Kyonne and @Anon Completly forgot about it. Watched all three of the movies, enjoyed every single one. Well, some people have told me that the rest of Nielsen's movies was.. not as high in quality.

Prior to Airplane!, Nielsen only did dramatic roles. He usually played the heavy, mob enforcers and similar stuff. It was Airplane! and Police Squad! In Color that turned him on to comedy, which he turned out to be especially good at. he also started doing voiceover work like his stint on Katie & Orbie.

@Kyonne, Barbatos is cool. I have one HGUC built (Form 4), and have Form 6 and the 1/100 Regular waiting for building.

I wanted to do this color scheme, hence learning to paint on Unicorn. Just spray cans though first. Don't really have a space for airbrush work.

I really want to do some custom stuff. Like a Haman Karn Sazabi, or a uNICOrn Gundam lol

@ChocolateCakeLover, so you don't like films. Okay, if you just don't find the medium compelling than I can forgive your view on Ghostbusters. Saying it is awful, though, doesn't really tell me much if you just don't like much films in general.

@Galich, ignoring the second part of the movie is a huge disservice to the film. Likewise everyone remembers the first half for being "funny" but it is really fucked up. The movie is a complete package with two halfs that complement each other.

It's my favorite Kubrick film.

@ZuljinRaynor I wouldn't say that I dislike the second half of the movie for not being "funny", it was just, in my honest opinion, blander and less memorable. Was it supposed to be a full package with the first part? Sure, but I honestly believe that saying that a part of a film is worse is a completely valid criticism.

Wouldn't really agree with calling the first part "fucked up", it was trying to make a point in a certain manner. Then again, as a non-American I never really felt the climate of the 'Nam war.

I remember there was a exhibition in my city's museum with Kubrick's props and all. Things like the skirts of the creepy twins from the Shining, a remade room from 2001: Space Odyssey, etc. - I loved every single minute of it, it was really well made.

In short, go back to LL V:

And yes, I'll go out of my way and say that The Shining is my favourite Kubrick movie.

@Galich, a lot of people like they first part because they think it is "funny." But I do think the first part is "fucked up" because of what Pvt Pyle goes through, and that's what I mean is fucked up; what Pyle goes though. The entire half is an ordeal and it is not funny. It is horrific and that is what it shows us. It does it really well and is memorable because of Ermey. He is what makes it such a memorable part.

I also disagree with the second part being worse than the first part. I prefer it to the first part. People say "nothing happens" in the second part, while it has much more in the way of looking at the characters than the first half did which is pretty much Joker and Pyle. The sniper part is my favorite scene in the movie.

@ZuljinRaynor I'd call it "fucked up" if the sargeant wouldn't meet a punishment for tossing all of crap at Private Pyle. Sure, it is both horrifying and funny, but there's a way to merge both. I get where you're coming from, since I've disliked Dr. Strangelove and didn't find anything funny about it. I guess it depands on what someone likes.

The sniper part was my favourite scene from the second half of the movie.

Yep, he played the commander of the Bellerophon in the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet!

@Blackkitty What made me give up French? Well...my last year of middle school I took French. I actually really enjoyed it and learned so much. It was the first language I learned seriously. ( We learn Spanish here in the US from like Kindergarten to 6th grade but we always learn the same shit and never progress beyond greetings, colors, numbers) When I entered high school, I had the option of Japanese. I didn't learn a lot because our teacher didn't speak hardly any English...but the structure and syntax of it was fascinating. Then I transferred schools the following year and I could take French again (but start all over) or pick German or Latin. I choose German and just stuck with it for 3 years. I'm..kind of all over the place... >__> What confuses me sometimes is numbers because in German they do their numbers opposite of French! 28 in German is 8 and 20 and in French it's 20-8. Why did you chose French?

The only kinds of 80s films that really interests me are B-grade slasher films ^ ^; there is something surreal about them for some reason.

also, one more presentation today lol. Hopefully it goes well.

I finally finished watching Game of Thrones last night.
Well, all available episodes at least. Two more seasons to come, I've heard...
It was a lot better than I expected at first. I binge-watched all 6 seasons within a month or so.
Now I'm finally free for some of the recommendations I got here ^^b
Thanks a lot again!

@ Rina

There was a time when I used to like slasher movies as well...
Tell me some of your favorites! ^^ I'm always after recommendations ;)

And good luck with your presentation!
