Also I guess the author messed up the colors for page 18 and 19, since they're lighter.

I always thought of this as using the ship girls to represent what the ships would have thought/said if they did have souls. (Or something like that)

Essentially, this is post World War II and Sakawa and Nagato are about to be used as atomic bomb testing targets. Her comrades, the group of aircraft carriers in the middle of the comic, have all been sunk.

This made me sad, so I looked for this again.

The joke is that most of the ships at Operation Crossroads were in fact American. Doesn't make it any less heartbreaking, but I needed some cheering up after this...
