And you hit the critical point I think, of why this pairing works better than something like NicoMaki. They're different, but in a lot of ways complimentary. For NicoMaki, they're pretty much archetypical tsunderes, with the shyness covered up by bravado, the dishonesty, etc. So to get a good story, one has to break out of type in order to provide that contrast. Which I must say, some authors pull off well. But when you match Maki up with pretty much any of the rest, you've got those contrasts in place already and don't need that step of changing one or both, or putting in a third party like Nico's sisters to break the tension.

Actually, it's got nothing to do with 4chan or same-sex relationships not being accepted or anything like that. It's an in-joke following this one-shot, which suggests that a second-hand kiss is even more high level than oral sex. So following that, holding hands must be even more lewd, in fact the lewdest thing one can do.

@Nez Plus it doesn't hurt that basically the only reason why Maki is a thing in the first place is because Honoka is stubborn and airheaded and awesome and dragged her out into the group because she was fascinated by her piano. I think the problem that comes in with offbranch ships that rest within concept only are just too personalized. This one doesn't rely on that nearly as much as say, UmiEri, but that just breeds ground for ship fights.

Personally I'll do all my ship fighting on KanColle tyvm.

"Offbranch" is an interesting way to put it, since from what I gather there's not much more source support for a "main branch" ship like NicoMaki, it's just some of the higher profile/quality doujin authors like Ooshima picked up on them and boosted the popularity. So it mainly comes down to a matter of luck in the end who'll be the OTP and who'll be the crackship.

Really, I think as long as you can justify it and everyone's in-character, then it's a valid ship regardless if they're the fandom's darling or not.

Isn't it unfair to judge pairings by one authors superior portrayal? Honestly I even thought they could be replaced in all three doujins and I wouldn't have noticed a difference, though the feeling of what-if is probably there for you

I just like NicoMaki more not because anime may had some teasing here and there but when I see a pic like this one I just imagine Nico being the good housewife with Maki being the salary woman in adult life, both things the anime suggested are indeed traits they have, so that for me goes against the high school romance

@Nez If "offbranch" came off as mitigating and/or patronizing, I apologize. I don't mean it because it's not valid; I meant it to be more of a "this is a valid ship but it's not the most popular or with the most hints".

But I will say I think calling who ends up being OTP a matter of luck is a bit incorrect for various situations. And I can speak from personal experience there because I was a fan of NicoMaki before I figured out yuri fanart/doujin/etc communities/congregators was a thing.
