Hiya, taking up Orange's offer to reply to you! I've been pretty busy since last night, but from what I can see, yeah, Cogito covered it—my pain came from those other posters who were super offensive. Now do I disagree with you about pigeonhole-ing, sure! It's not a reason to fight though, and obviously it should be fine for both of us to say whether we think a character is a certain way or not, no biggie. It's when we try to sit on each other's opinions in a dominating or toxic way, which crosses the line for me. I'd love it if conflicting ideas here could be expressed as "hey man, I totally respect that, but I have a different opinion that I also want to express". Not hard to be cool and happy. Let's put this conversation behind us and cherish the beloved lesbians?

Did I do okay, Orange? I've been taking some trainings in deescalation (a couple of my uni classmates are racist as shit, so been trying to make things better for everyone before they ruin our whole semester) and I'm hoping I did the right thing here? Yeah, totally fair. For me, the lack of ending confirmation wasn't significant. I never expected that going in, nor do I find it necessary. So I probably couldn't label it bait at that point, but I still wouldn't have been recommending it for strong female relationships, either. Open to trying a few episodes in season two (or more likely its movie series, I guess) to see if anything's changed, though.

Fixed. Thank you and sorry about that. Chapter 8 was the incorrect one.

I'm not gonna spend too much time hating, but my goodness Lycoris Recoil felt like one of the most uninspired shows I've seen. Girls with guns is like my favourite, but everything about this show felt so purposeless and overdone. With the exception of Mika and his lover, I guess. The fights rarely had much choreography or narrative weight. The plot on its own felt like a retread of other popular anime. The side characters didn't get enough screen time for me to treasure them. The comedy mostly consisted of panties and poop, neither of which I care for.

I'll agree with TB earlier. If you're like me or protectmomo and don't find yourself particularly enthralled by episode 3, just move on. It doesn't get better from here. If you're into it for the eminently giffable flirting, I can promise it disappears after episode 5. Unlike similar "subtext" shows, i.e. Machikado Mazoku, the narrative never grants their relationship primacy, either. Each time Takina is called upon to save someone she fulfills that role, but is then immediately discarded to focus on other, more important character conflicts (Chisato v Majima, Chisato v Yoshimatsu, Chisato v Fuki, etc.).

As for the yuri bait discussion earlier, I wasn't finished with the show so perhaps I shouldn't have participated. After finishing, I just wanted to agree with protectmomo in broad terms. As far as their classification, anyway. If we define "yuri bait" as "overt flirting between girls, portrayed to garner some audience with no interest in further development" then I think this one is pretty close. I've personally never experienced feeling baited till now - but this show just about did it. Yes, the two characters were sometimes physically close. Yes, they're sometimes forced by circumstance into intimate situations (panties, sleepover). These scenes never amounted to anything, though**. They're interesting out of context, but in the context of the story being told they never seemed to have any impact or relevance after.

I get that most don't agree with me on most of the above. That's okay! No need to worry about me using the word yuri bait in the future, it seems super inflammatory. Maybe I'll find joy in the doujins. I'm also hopeful this series' bombastic success spurns a bunch of copycats. The more girls with guns, the better.

** Episode 5, which actually does weave Takina's concern/curiosity for Chisato's heart into its episodic narrative with some fluidity. I was thrilled with that, it was a big motivation to keep watching. Unfortunately for me, I never fully bought into Takina caring so much in the first place, nor did she ever initiate any level of affection again.

There's nothing missing, exactly...and the story had plenty of romantic stuff the last two volumes to satiate me. But darn it, I really wanted to see Miss Sunflower say it back, even just once! The moon may be beautiful but that doesn't change the fact I'm dying of starvation out here...

Yes, absolutely. No, this isn't the wrong place. Here or any of the usual places I try to be available are all fine. As just a thought, it's much better to have a discussion when necessary, rather than use the one-way tag suggestion function to repeatedly make the same suggestion(s).

Like, what is the rape tag in a drama when most characters forgive it? Or constantly give justifications? The scene using drugs for revenge was triggering, similar to what I prevented from happening to a date-rape-drugged friend. Maybe my tag suggestion was too technical and looked rambling. Maybe what would be tagged drugs and rape in another story was too subtle an increase in problems for this one to get the tag...

We have had ongoing discussions about adding an extra tag for situations clearly appearing to the audience as rape or at least dubious consent that are not taken seriously by the narrative. There's a particular remark in the chapter that demonstrates how flippantly the characters understand the events - "If you were doing something this funny, you should've at least called me... <3."

(Upon reviewing chapter 8, it is surely Rape, and Blackmail. I'm not sure the Drugs or Drunk tags add much value, as these are discussed and implied, but never depicted. In my mind they do not add any necessary context beyond that already provided by the two now-present tags.)

There is a related conversation to be had with this particular series that you touched on. Throughout, there are suspect individuals engaging in suspect acts. To some extent, the messiness is the point. Certainly some nuance exists in how best to consider - and tag - stories about imperfect characters who are often quite horrible. In this instance, I'm not sure I find the distinction terribly relevant.

I'll review the rest of the series in the coming days and see if there are further adjustments that need to be made. It is possible the now-present tags for chapter 8 will change if the accompanying series tags change as well. No need to respond further, but it's fine if you wish to. Thanks.

Depends on which ones, but generally what happens in volume 7 of an LN doesn't really matter for an anime only watcher. I don't consider them much different especially when the romance isn't in the forefront like in Executioner and Otherside.

Yeah, supposed nefariousness aside (though, this is most of what matters, to some) I can't see much of a difference between them all. I loved Executioner's yuri (the anime), but based on a lot of folks' definitions it wouldn't even count as yuri in the first place. Could never recommend it for that element, and thus it's functionally pretty similar to some of the most prominent "bait" anime out there.

I don't think I agree with that at all; what usually drags things out are harems, love triangles, or in yuri roadblocks like "but we're both girls!"... The more memorable and/or highest rated het romances are usually pretty definitive over 12 or 24 episodes, especially if they're adaptations of shoujo.

And if they do end early, the endgame is usually very noteworthy from earlier on. To pull a yuri example, Sasameki Koto certainly felt like that sort of romance story. At least, that was my experience till I stopped watching het romance anime (~2016). This being the case doesn't undercut all yuri anime of course - Machikado could've ended after one season and it would have still been satisfying romance.
