Peak... Peak romantic writting!

Now, as someone who knows very little about the Touhou universe, what becoming a magician implies?

Depends on interpretation since it's not clear what would happen.

Basically, an extremely important rule is that human villagers cannot become youkai because it upsets the balance of Gensokyo. In canon, Reimu killed someone who became a youkai.

Becoming a magician means becoming a youkai magician. Some fans say that since Marisa was originally from the Human Village, her becoming a magician would be a break of the rules and as such Reimu may be forced to kill her. However, the series never really has explored this concept in-depth and so it can go basically anyway a fan wants to take it. Sometimes it just means that Marisa will become long-lived and outlive Reimu, sometimes it means Reimu will exterminate Marisa, sometimes it means that nothing will change between them.

Though based on chapter 3 of the work where Reimu hits Marisa's head when Marisa jokes about becoming a magician, this doujin's interpretation is closer to it causing a crack in their friendship

That's... Can be potencially bad. Anyway, thanks.

The setting takes the view that it's all well and good to be a human who does magic, but after a certain point you will pass beyond a threshold and become something inhuman; the usual line in the sand is considered the point at which a practitioner becomes able to sustain themselves (both in no longer needing food/sleep and in no longer aging) purely by their magic. At that point they are no longer human but a being of magic itself, and thus a youkai magician.

Most consider that at the very least that happening to Marisa would be a rift between them. Reimu has relatively cordial relations with a number of inhuman beings, but none of them are her best friend/ love interest (in most works). And if one were, that could reflect badly on a person whose job description includes 'protect humans from non-humans'. Even the more soft works can play up at least the whole 'we belong to separate worlds now' type of trope if Marisa goes full youkai.

And on one hand, Marisa has distanced herself from the village in a couple of ways (which some have used to justify her skating by on a technicality); she's been living out in the woods by herself as a human magician for years. But it's not a big town, and her family and last name are if not well known then definitely not concealed. So if she did transgress that taboo, there would be very little chance of brushing it under the rug.

All that being said, the rough edges of the dilemma are suggested by canon sources, but everything else is within the nebulous space of speculative fandom thinking, as are many of the fine details of the setting.

Myon blushing was an oasis in an otherwise pretty gloomy chapter.

And I love how in fanon Yukari is basically Reimu's weird mom.

Though based on chapter 3 of the work where Reimu hits Marisa's head when Marisa jokes about becoming a magician, this doujin's interpretation is closer to it causing a crack in their friendship

Which also mirrors how she killed the fortune teller that became a youkai.

Darn, Marisa is really getting put through the wringer in this doujin. One challenge after another and now, while she's at her lowest, Okina steps in for some more abuse.

Pretty sure the danger is not Reimu "having to kill" Marisa when she turns. As I see it, this rule applies more to existing villagers breaking out of the system, which Marisa hasn't been a part of in a long time.

As I see it, the danger is the big rift between Reimu and Marisa that would be created. After all, Marisa turning would put her in a place that "Reimu's hand can't reach" as described prior. The hakurei shrine maiden's job is kind of doomed to solitude in a certain way, a human that acts as a single intermediary between humans and youkai and as such doesn't belong to either. She can befriend either of course, but there will always distance between her and anyone else in terms of the "world" they live in.

Fortunately, we have Marisa at Reimu's side in a very similar position, a human that doesn't belong to either group and as such, has always been at her side to keep her company. Engage with her on the same level both as a rival and a very close friend.

Of course, if Marisa were to become a youkai, those two would still likely be friends, Marisa is still Marisa after all, but not "close" friends anymore and for sure not romantically.

calling it immediately to hold on the Okina hate, i stake my life Okina and Yukari are doin this together as mutual wingmen.

That being said, I would've kinda preferred Okina didn't be involved and Marisa reached this conclusion out of pure desperation, and that's when Reimu shows up.

I agree with your opinion. I'd prefer their confession to be a more private and low-key affair. Also, yes, this is pretty much a "pretend to do something outrageous/potentially dangerous to push them to interact with each other" thing, a thing side characters tend to do in romance whenever a (potential) couple is avoiding each other

This isn't a doujinshi, but a proper manga published by Kadokawa.

A bit sad that this is ending, but it was a great run overall and a fantastic chapter. I'll definitely get those manga once the last volume will be released.
