I'm not sure if the implication in Looking to Tomorrow is that Mayu and Saki got together, but I'd like to think it's just regular embarrassment, because I think the ending to the main story is great. Mika and Mayu ending up together would've been a perfectly fine conventional ending, Saki and Mayu ending up together would've been fine if a bit surprising (how often does the third wheel end up winning?), but I never would've expected an ending where they all stay as friends. I was disappointed for a minute, but after thinking it over for a bit, I decided I really liked it. This ending isn't even bittersweet, all the main characters end up happy. They all grow as people, they grow as friends, and they grow to understand their sexuality better.
The side story is a bit wacky, and I probably wouldn't have it enjoyed it that much if it was presented on its own, but it gives a nice contrast to the (by comparison) more cerebral main story. I really don't like Yui, but I understand where she's coming from, y'know? I assume she's the straight* (possibly) character mentioned in the first volume's author's note.
Rereading this after many years, good stuff.
Re-read it for the fourth time and I think that I finally got it.
I think the straight person Takemiya Jin mentioned in the afterwords is Yui. She is the only one with an exclusive interest in the opposite sex. Yet her love for Takako becomes more and more intense as they live together. But there was never any mention of sexual desire on Takako from Yui. Even touching is a no. Takako is gay and has both sexual and romantic interest in Yui all along. Yui is straight, and knowing that,Takako would never forced the issue. Yui's feeling for Takako is pure love.
I think in the very last chapters of the manga they finally sleep together. At one point Yui also almost spilled the beans to Mika about sex. So at that point they have done it. But it shows how slow and long it will take Yui to be ready. But Yui is still straight. She has no interest in another woman, because of Takako's love and what she had done to Takako when she attacked Takako. Thus it is also a penance. The "who would I even marry?" answer of Yui to Takako is also another clue.
Yui is an example of how to purely love a person, So a relationship between a gay and straight person can happen, it is just not that simple. Both sides have to know their own and their partners limits. Boundaries are keys.
