What do you mean? Aoi Hana was with Jmanga and there's a chance it'll get put back up here if it isn't licensed. This actually has a conclusion.

Unless you're talking about how you are unable to read much more of either. In that case you're right.

They were probably referring to the fact that Aoi Hana is ending in the next issue of Manga Erotics F.

Remember a few years back when you had to get lucky to find a story without an ambiguous, open or outright bad end? Now it's time for wrist-slitting if the couple isn't fucking like rabbits, ordering the wedding cake and shown as 80 year olds by the end of the series. Fandom's gotten spoiled.

spoiled? that sounds like an overreaction to me...hey i'm just making an observation...and it's depressing...it feels like yuri is dying...this, aoi hana sasameki koto etc...seems like it's all the one shots and doujinshi at the moment...what i've liked most about this genre is the long developed romance like girlfriends and octave and hanjuku joshi...:p

I do like some of the one shots ...don't get me wrong...i like it...i appreciate it...all of it that is being scanlated...i'm grateful...i'm just depressed...is that alright with you?

SORRY FOR BEING DEPRESSED!!!! jeez...:P

hey i'm just making an observation

So do I. Sure, we won't have 9 volume monsters anytime soon but most people don't even want those. I'm one of the few people who don't say SK should've been cut down to size. And Aoi Hana alienated a lot of people (including me) once Shimura started to ignore the main character for months at a time and meander with side characters that never amounted to anything only to kick off the Ah-chan-jojo period.

We have a lot more series, oneshots, doujins, porn, visual novels and even anime appearances now than we had just 5 years back. And, to get back to my original point, most of those have a happy end. Read some of the earlier oneshots or series here and see how unusual that was.

Didn't know it was ending. It was A LOT FUCKING LONGER than Notes though, hopefully it'll be a good end.

Well...I'm not just being contrary for the sake of it...Aoi Hana is excellent throughout but that's just my opinion and it's been around since... 2004? Blue Drop...2004?...i think the maria sama anime dates back to 2004?....Strawberry panic anime...2006? Simoun came out in 2006?...five years ago...2008..there was octave, girl friends, hanjuku joshi, sasameki koto,...

...well...i'm sure i could go on and there's much more that i'm certain to have missed....
...it seems to me that yuri wasn't quite so barren 5 years ago...as for now...but hey...just my opinion...if i think a genre i love is winding down and maybe say something about it on a forum...maybe i'm being out of line...maybe i'm spoiled...i hope your right...there's a few manga series i'm interested in right now ...Girl's ride is one....that's probably not finished...maybe that will continue for a while yet...developing the characters further, introducing new ones...:P

While Notes coming to such an early end is certainly a disappointment, it is freakin' ridiculous to generalize that to an overall "winding down" of yuri. You must hardly be keeping up with new anime at all, nor actually trying to follow manga releases, to think that we're experiencing a decline in yuri content.

Anime-wise, there are few recent shows focusing exclusively/explicitly on yuri romance/drama in the way works like Strawberry Panic did. However, works with subtext/sideplot-focus at or above the level of shows like Marimite or Simoun are freakin' overflowing and you simply must not be watching them. I pretty regularly manage to find 5-6 shows focusing exclusively on yuri subtext (i.e. no het, strong focus on female relationships) at least every season, and that's not counting the frequent side-characters/stories which even manage to show up in mainstream shit like shounen or harem anime.

As for manga, certainly it's true that we have been getting fewer long series lately. This, combined with the rising wave of good-to-decent shorter series we've been getting lately, probably results in an effect where fewer individual series stand out as memorable. One thing you should probably consider as to why series like Sasameki Koto or Aoi Hana are so long is that they take a shitton of time getting around to the romantic development. While longer series are good for getting more invested in the characters, it is probably for the better that that kind of pacing is not being emphasized anymore. One of your own examples, Hanjuku Joshi, is a masterpiece that managed to tell its story in 2 volumes and there are still plenty of great series coming out on this very reader which surpass that volume count.

You know Sol, you should be sharing some of these series with all this yuri. While I highly doubt they can pass up Marimite for pseudo-romance, or Simoun for actual canon lesbians, I'm interested.

This...pretty much is what i wanted to say. I'm interested too.

I saw some of a channel and yuruyuri but they was based on a 4 koma manga and was ...not what i look for in the romance genre...i've also seen a 'few cute girls do cute things' anime series appearing but again it's just...

Maria sama was, in my opinion, not just fantastic pseudo romance...it is probably one of the best romance anime titles i have seen. The epic melodrama over such trivial things, the music, the pacing... every time i've watched it it's never lost any of it's impact.(..i can't bring myself to abreviate it as marimite because it reminds me of that rancid sludge that some crazies spread on their toast or whatever..)

And Simoun is more than just a romance...it's an epic sci-fi romance with layered themes about war, religion, childhood, adulthood, innocence lost etc...and its far removed from something like natsuiro kiseki, if that was the sort of thing you(Sol) were referring to.

...but that's just my opinion...:P

Well just looking at last year there would be one proper yuri romance (altough it isn't very good) in the kuttsukiboshi OVA. Also easy too mention but non really romance focused like Simoun would be Moretsu pirates, Black rock shooter and Symphogear. Then there's a sea of more subtexty stuff like Saki A-Hen, Rinne no lagrange etc. Altough still nothing really like Marimite.

Also would recommend the currently ongoing Yuyushiki, altough its in similar style to yuruyuri/A channel.

Redun's post does manage to capture a lot of it. Of course Maria-sama and Simoun are classics for a lot more reasons than just their yuri content which means I wouldn't put that many shows on the same level (in fact, Marimite remains my favourite yuri-related series of all time, although that in large part leans towards the novels more than the anime). However, that's in terms of overall "objective" quality of the anime. In terms of plain yuri content, as an anime watcher whose consumption is at least 60% driven strictly by an interest in yuri, I've been satisfied every season for approximately 2 years.

Some general very reliable categories for subtext every season are magical girl series and slice of life. Starting from Madoka, you can get into Precure (Smile, Heartcatch, DokiDoki, Suite are the ones I`ve watched, but pretty much every season has at least some subtext, and the pair from Futari wa is an iconic couple), and also Nanoha, which had its movies come out recently.

As for slice of life, both Yuyushiki and Hidamari Sketch are both very high quality, strong subtext shows (Yuyushiki in particular is singlehandedly carrying the current season for me, and is pretty mindblowingly gay for the genre) amongst a handful of others. Teekyuu is a recent insane, quite yuri, extremely short but enjoyable comedy as well.

Then you have the miscellaneous works every season which you might have to do a bit of digging to discover. Mouretsu Pirates, Symphogear, Sasami-san@gambaranai are a couple worthwhile ones in terms of overall satisfaction (Rinne no Lagrange and Black Rock Shooter as works which have decent yuri content, but don't end well.). Strike Witches and VividRed Operation are very fanservice heavy but also pretty much exclusively yuri-friendly. Saki also remains my second-most favourite yuri fandom, for both the yuri and the mahjong.

Pretty much all these shows have unmistakably blatant yuri subtext within the main cast. There's a lot more which have just the occasional yuri subtext, or strictly focus on a female cast. There's also a ton of shows I skipped out on which have het or male main characters as the central romance, but canon or blatant yuri within the side cast, like Horizon or Psycho-pass. For just yuri, I would recommend the shows above, but a lot does open up if you have wider taste.

That's a pretty excellent post. Yuyushiki is one I'm going to have to check out - I've liked the manga and Komata's Lucky Star/K-On doujinshi (A few of which are on the site, and are plenty yuri-ish in their own right) for a while, yet I somehow missed that whole "anime adaption" thing till very recently.

I certainly have a much better idea of what you were talking about in your previous post now. I can't say too much on the topic as I've only recently caught up with yuri anime from years ago (Simoun, Saki, Marimite, Aoi Hana, SK, Madoka), but I do thank you kindly for sharing.

yeah i second that... great post...(...i totally wish i said that first.:P..)..i haven't seen precure...i've wanted too but i feel like ive been spoiled by nanoha, which was the first magical girl series i watched, and madoka. I even tried to watch sailor moon recently, for obvious reasons, but had to give up ...mainly due to poor audio...i caught a few episodes of symphogear on the yuri radar but lost interest at some point.... the same goes for rinne and black rock shooter...i liked hidamari sketch at first back in the day but again...
...space pirates was pretty fab, i love saki a hen(of course)...i guess there is a lot of non yuri in anime... it's just...i want some proper yuri like strawberry panic or maria sama or aoi hana or girl friends or...

...damn it... all right i concede... i'm spoiled...i'm spoiled fandom overreacting at the, imo, hasty end of manga i'm fond of...there i said it...and i apologise for my part in derailing the thread...

..i guess i can look forward to future releases of hana to hoshi...
...i really wish aoi hana wasn't ending though...damn loved following fumi through her tragic love life...

We worked off magazine scans, not volume scans for this series. Volume 1 ended with chapter 3. Volume 2 will only collect was has been released already and the yet untranslated last chapter, possibly add some special and afterword, but that's it. The series is over.
