^As far as my memory serves that sounds about right. I think it's the idea of the skin being "permanently marked", that makes it supposedly tainted according to beauty standards in many countries. Though I'm not sure if missing limbs/eyes markets that well with a general audience either.

@Throbelisk Doubt it- why make it complicated? It seems to just be Alt reality.

It could be isekai or even still in gensokyo - you see tech there to varying degrees in doujins- but would they really start working in what looks like an animation studio if they came to earth- or set one up in gensokyo?

Alt reality seems the most likely and easy to explain.
