some might say it is a crack ship, but for real though, it certainly has potential to be an amazing slow burn, with them relating to and understanding each other and healing together from their traumas. Firstly, it could follow a rivals-to-friends-to-lovers trope, like, Asuka sees Rei as an obstacle to become the best and assossiates Rei with the doll her mother had, and Rei doesn't see the point of friendship since it is not her reason to exist and was discouraged from having emotions. Secondly, Asuka and Rei are polar opposites externally, both in color palettes (it's in the character design my dudes) and personalities, where Asuka externally releases her emotions and Rei represses them. Last but not least, they share similarities as well, as both Rei and Asuka have been trough similar hard times and traumas fighting Angels and dealing adults manipulating them, they both need to learn to express what they feel and think better, they both were trained from the beginning to be pilots and think that they are replaceable (Asuka by thinking she will not be the best pilot and people notgiving her affection and praise, Rei by thinking she's just an object and a clone among many). But yeah im biased because i love this type of dynamic and drama in a ship.
