I've actually liked this pairing for a while. It's kind of like, "Ok, let the people who actually want to be in a relationship be in a relationship." Not that I think Touko deserves to be alone, but I could see a happy ending where she decides to be alone for better reasons than the ones she currently has.

Edit: That being said, based on the way she has acted, deep down Touko probably wants a relationship too, but she sure is difficult about it.

You should never start with Fate/Zero, but I guess at this point there are more secondaries than anything else in the fandom. Heck most people don't read the Visual Novel anyway, so everything loses its meaning lol
The connection between Rin and Sakura was completely missing from the first two routes of F/SN, it wasn't even hinted at. The reveal in HF was a really big deal back when this was still a new thing. It's absolutely not something you should know ahead of time (one of the many reasons not to watch/read F/Z first).
