If you're going to have them look at the viewer, at least give them shocked/angry expressions so that it seems like someone walked in on them. I could see this if it were Idolmaster or something, where posing for a photo would be totally in character. But for these two, it's hard to picture it.

That said, not sure I'd say it's not intended to depict gay love. It may be that the artist sees a lot of shots like those and just assumed well, that's how it's supposed to go. Their other stuff on Pixiv seems similar.
