Favorite manga artist: I'm gonna be boring and say Yukito Kishiro. Sure, there are probably better illustrators, but the character and BG artwork in Battle Angel has always impressed me.

Favorite movies? Oh jeez... just to start with, Inland Empire, The Cold Lands, Syndromes And A Century, L'Eclisse, Playtime, Tokyo Drifter, Infernal Affairs, Phantasm (first film only), Argento's Phenomena, Kurosawa's Dreams, A Tree Of Palme, the Utena movie, the Metropolis anime, and Kaguya-hime.

Confession time: I was never a big fan of Cowboy Bebop. Or EVA. I can respect what Hideaki Anno was trying to do, it's just one of those shows that I admire more than like. Though I did like the End Of Evangelion movie. I like fucked-up, difficult films. :p

Oh yeah, and my name comes from 'Suosikki' which is Finnish for 'favorite'. No particular reason. I just liked the way it sounded.

I really recommend you to read it then. I've read it in french, I don't think it's a bad thing if it's in Polish).

I also recommend to read the illustrated tolkien encyclopedia, by David Bay. It's a gem to someone interested in the universe, and it's very well done.

@Suosiki, I'm not a fan of Cowboy Bebop either. I do like what they did with all the song titles and stuff though.

I am a fan of EVA (not the rebuild films though) and I'm not really a fan of End of Evangelion. I do like the the scene with Komm, Süsser Tod cause it's so crazy. (My favorite Hideaki Anno work is Aim for the Top! Gunbuster.)

@Utoptia, I'll have to find time to read it. It's been a while since I read any books. (Last one I read was Masters of Doom lol).

I love it because you get to see so much of the Shire in it. Also it has the whole Fellowship and I just love Sean Bean as Boromir. I cry every single time during the scene in the forest.

Sorry, I was off watching Stranger Things ^^

Did I mention Stranger Things before...?
Not sure. (^_-)v

But fuck that show is great! You need to watch it at night, in the dark, in total quiet...
The music, the atmosphere, just great!

Best performance of Winona Ryder ever!
I was never a Winona Ryder fan! But damn it's good to see her back after all that crap... I guess I just don't like watching people fail... (unless I hate them! ^^)

Go watch Stranger Things!!!

@ ZuljinRaynor

You! You like The Thing! And now go and watch Stranger Things! You won't be disappointed! ;) (Sorry for the typo! It's called Das Ding in German ^^)

@ Utoptia

Haven't seen Ah-Ga-Ssi yet.
Following was Nolans first movie. Also very good. Liked it very much. But totally different from his other films...

You seem to have similar tastes... (Great!) Which are your favorite movies? ^^

(Go and watch Stranger Things!)

I really didn't like EVA, even if I acknowledge its qualities and I'm aware that it's very well done and deep.
People usually praise it for its introspection, but it's precisely what bugged me. Not the introspection itself, but the character.

EVA is a legend among the anime, and it was something totally new and incredible back in 1996. It has inspired lots and lots of people and anime.

Shinji : the useless crybaby, coward, capricious. I wanted to punch my screen every time he talked...
Asuka :The tsundere without the cute side of the tsundere. Pretentious and arrogant as hell. She pissed me off so much I couldnt stand it.
Rei : The emotionless albinos that accomplishes her duty like a robot. As unbearable as the others two.

I had a hard time watching EVA cause of them. I HATE those personalities, that have been used again again and over again in various anime, and having to watch the strongest incarnations, the avatar of these personalities I hate so much was painful.

This aside, EVA is a great serie, a classic and a must-see. I just couldn't like it, but again, it's a cornerstone of the japanimation.

My favorites movies uh ?
Well, for me,the greatest movie of all time is Mulholland drive.
Then, not in order, I'd say : RQFD, LOTD, once upon a time in america, full metal jacket, [all tarantino films except jackie brown], black swan, ghost dog, dr strangelove, and PMMM : rebellion. That's a lot, and I can't order em, but those are my fav.

edit : forgot to mention Schindler's list and Carol. Include them as well

I have no issues with Shinji because he is 14 years old and his dad is an awful person and father. Asuka is annoying in the anime (I prefer her toned down version in Rebuild even though I hate Rebuild), but likewise a child with her own issues. Everyone in EVA has issues. Anno has issues.

I dunno, as I've gotten older, I've less complained about child characters. :P

I think it's a reasonable point that if it takes a commentary track to realize that a movie is smart, then the director didn't do a good job of putting that smart into the movie and it still resides mostly in his head and explanations.

I can totally understand listening to a commentary improving one's opinion though, since if nothing else that's added value and insight. I haven't listened to many commentary tracks, but what I have were interesting and worth the listen.

Kind of a pity that not too long after Total Recall, Ironside had a few public meltdowns to do with alcohol and the like. Fortunately he got back on his feet relatively quickly.

@Utoptia Reminds me that I've visited Schindler's factory less than 2 months ago, there was surprisingly little about the man himself and a lot about Polish resistance to Germans during WWII..

Favourite movies, wow. I don't watch many these days, but I used to watch a reasonable number. Bunch of Ghibli of course, mainly Whisper of the Heart, Totoro, Kiki's and Nauisicaa, although they're all good. Akira, Milennium Actress, GitS, etc. All the usual stuff.

Western animated stuff too. The Book of Kels is amazing. Mary and Max will make you cry. Edison & Leo is hilarious, if hard as hell to find.

Old stuff like Danny Kaye's work (I've seen The Inspector General how many times?), Topper, Death Takes a Holiday, Nosferatu, silly as it is. Young Frankenstein. 2001: A Space Odyssey of course, with the sound turned up.

An assortment of other stuff. The original Star Wars trilogy, even-numbered Star Trek films, the Scott Pilgrim movie, Battle Beyond the Stars (total guilty pleasure), Stop Making Sense (the best concert movie ever), The Princess Bride and probably a hundred I can't think of off the top of my head.

That's a good start I guess.

@Nezchan

Yeah, that's a reasonable point. I won't know, however, since it may have been just me not figuring it out on my own since I was kinda young when I originally saw Total Recall. I kinda just want to give him the benefit of the doubt there. If I am wrong, then I'm wrong, but I can't go back to how it was before. I see all the things now. Like I mentioned, it's my favorite movie so I maybe blind to seeing lots of faults.

I've only listened to Total Recall, Escape from New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China's. Kurt Russell and John Carpenter have really enjoyable commentary tracks, though they do get off tangent quite a bit and talk about other things. I have a huge appreciation for what John Carpenter does. Not all his movies are good, but I have respect for his filmmaking.

Basically the original version of Eva (haven't seen rebuild) was about taking a kid with PTSD and making it worse and worse until he snapped. Never was quite sure why.

I think because "Hideki Anno." At least that seems to be a simple answer to it. I believe he was suffering from depression at the time, though I don't know if that ultimately is why EVA is how it is.

John Carpenter

Did you know the name of the artist John K Peta comes from John carpenter, and K Peta is how a japanese would pronounce carpentar.

Zujin

EVA was made to be a "otaku trap" it begins like a basic mecha anime and then the show reflects and shows otakus the things that're wrong with em and their own problems (it may be a reason why japanese didn't like it when it got diffused. But from what I've heard, Anno was also quite depressed at that time just like someone said. Dunno if it has anything to do with the serie tho.

Well, what do you know. I didn't realize that.

I think it's funny that EVA deconstructs the mecha anime, when Anno and his team made a really great mecha anime in Gunbuster. And if I recall, they were basically huge Otaku to start.

Interesting how most of the crew went on to do FLCL right after, probably to recover.

Gainax in the Gunbuster days was a huge nest of otakus, and it hadn't been long since the anime studio had grown from the group that did the legendary Daicon videos. They were running a "garage kit" model business on the side too, which is about as otaku a thing as you can imagine.

Gainax has done some more standard super robot mecha since then too, with Diebuster (with a lot of FLCL influence here, hence why some Gunbuster fans do not like it though I am not one of those) and Gurren Lagann (no Anno here but still has a Gainax ending).

John Carpenter went on a political incorrectness jag for a while, and his films during that period range from goofy (Ghosts Of Mars, AKA 'Let's snort coke and nuke the Injuns') to borderline unwatchable (Escape From L.A., Vampires) But he's directed enough good movies that I can forgive the less-good ones.

@Utoptia, Mulholland Drive is SO good. Have you seen Inland Empire? If not, I encourage you to. It's a lot less accessible than MD... there's very little narrative continuity, or even a narrative at all, as most of the film is based around emotions and themes, not plot. But if you can deal with that, it's amazing. Probably the most mind-altering movie I've ever seen.
