I know a lot of movies and their different versions... but I gotta admit that I never really paid attention to that as far as Alien 3 is concerned... I kinda feel ashamed now... (^_^“)
I guess I'd have to watch both versions to really say something about that...
Probably already saw both since I watch it every time they show it on TV... but I'm really not sure.

Definitely sounds like a new mission for me ^^

Looking back on the thread and I'm seeing someone use Total Recall as an example of a smart action film, and I'm like 0.o

Have you seen the directory's commentary for Total Recall? The (hilarious) one where Arnold Schwarzenegger gives a play by play of the events on screen and Paul Verhoeven actually talks about making the movie? Paul goes through so many details and things that I missed when originally watching it. Like why they decided on fade to white. Or the fact that one of the characters gives away all the events to the movie afterward.

The action in itself isn't smart, but the backdrop to the film is. The events that occur and the techniques placed throughout. Originally I thought the movie was real. Now I am convinced it is a dream.

Much prefer it to the Philip K. Dick original it is inspired by, though the ending to that made me go "Oh shit."

It's my favorite Arnold (and probably in general) movie of all time. :P

It's really thanks to the director's commentary that I feel this way about the movie. And it's why I hated the remake so much (because it was just a dumb action movie that just mimicked set pieces from the 1990 one).

Edit: And I don't get nasty! Unless it's a bad movie like Suicide Squad. :P

My username on Steam is ♀MattoMaindo♀. One of my previous names is ButtPirate because my brother's a fuck-with and changed my name when I wasn't looking. That's about all the embarassing names I got. My youtube username used to be everysnakesdream22, but I wouldn't say that's embarrassing. I was just a stupid kid with a bad taste in names. My Minecraft account and Runescape account is Warthogkill1. I'm not even that big of a fan of Halo, so I have no idea why I chose that.

Here are some of my favorite movies. I probably forgot one or two but oh well...
So apart from Alien the first ones that come to mind are:

Oldboy (2003), Memento, Memories of Murder, Requiem for a Dream, Drive, Kill Bill, Taxi Driver, Zodiac and Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf. Oh, and Blade Runner, of course!

There are a lot of movies I really love. But those have a special place in my heart (ღˇ◡ˇ)~♥
Not saying they're the best movies ever made but I adore them!

The fact that it blew its own premise the moment Arnie got cast was a dumb move for a start. The whole idea is that this is someone you doubt is an action hero or not. That doubt is supposed to stick with you throughout, what is reality and what isn't and so forth. But Arnie right after a series of successful action films? Of course he's a real action hero, who'd think otherwise? Although I gather the film was originally written for Richard Dreyfuss, and later William Hurt, to star. Either of those wouldn't blow the premise from the get-go at least. Follow up by a film with some tremendously silly effects (the eye-popping), set pieces (the whole Kuato thing made me laugh when I shouldn't have), frankly painful one-liners ("Screw Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!") and large chunks that was basically Arnie being chased around by Michael Ironside (who was the bright point of the film for me) and occasionally remembering that there was some sort of thing about whether stuff was real or not, then shrugging and going back to the silliness.

I recall being tremendously disappointed in the theatre, and predicting the painfully obvious closing line well in advance (as did the people with me).

Sorry, was off to continue watching Stranger Things...

There are 7 versions even ^^

Well... the Final Cut version is the Final Cut where last adjustments were made and a few little mistakes were corrected.
But I mostly watched the Director's Cut back in the day. I'm not really that picky about it.
But since Ridley Scott was never really happy with the Director's Cut version – the Final Cut is the way to go, I guess...

But I'd love to watch the Early Cut version that's never been released... ^^

RQFD is a masterpice.
All of the tarantino are excellent.
Guess it goes for scorses too (kundun aside).
Memento is the first film from nolan, isn't it ? Haven't watched it yet.

I apologize in advance as some thoughts here may be all over the place. And I might have not finished some thoughts as I don't want to bore everyone with me gushing over this silly Arnold movie.

I would agree with that assessment when I originally watched it. I was really into Arnold movies when I originally saw it and of course that's the reason why I saw it. Dumb action movies was what I enjoyed (because I was playing stuff like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom) and I never thought that there was more to it. There is no way this whole movie is just a dream, right? I was also younger so I didn't think that much about movies and just enjoyed them for ooo action! (Though, now that I am older, the violence in the film does make me a little uncomfortable at times). I mean I will gush over this movie because of the insight I got from the commentary.

Maybe Paul has brainwashed me, but I was thoroughly convinced by his commentary track that the movie is smart and I can't help but see the movie in the dumb action movie way anymore. To me it is because of this insight I think it is a smart movie. Like how they explain that the guy at Rekall tells the plot of the movie. There is a fade to black at Rekall, and after that we are supposed to be kept guessing. Like the fade to white is supposed to symbolize a lobotomy. Maybe I was just not paying attention, but when I was spoonfed these things it clicked for me.

I mean, commentary tracks have do this for me with stuff like The Thing or Escape from New York... my opinion of them elevated after I watched the commentary and heard how they worked on the film. The work they put into it and how they do it is what leads me to believe they are smart movies. It's why I love the Thing even though I hate horror movies.

This is a movie I have purchased 3 times so far. DVD, Blu Ray (the original release lacks the Arnold and Verhoeven commentary) and Mind Bending Edition (latest version with color correction and the restored commentary. I am also glad that Total Recall did not get a sequel so it gets to stay open ended because Minority Report was originally supposed to be a sequel to Total Recall and that would mean the events of the movie were real instead of a dream, and I prefer it believe that it was a dream.

Have you seen the remake? I think if you have issues with the 1990 one, the remake only makes them worse as it doesn't even try to make you doubt the movie at any point except at the very end with a pan to a billboard of Rekall. Though maybe you will prefer Colin Farrell to Arnold, but I'm not a fan of Colin Farrell so he did not do anything for me in that film.

No one in the film compares to Michael Ironside though. "See you at the party."

TL;DR, I guess Paul Verhoeven brainwashed me with his commentary track, but that is why I believe Total Recall is a smart movie. I'm not saying it is a genius movie, but it's pretty smart of a dumb action movie, you know?

Also, Anon99, I have a friend who hates Total Recall and think it's stupid but I still get along with them, so please don't think I hate people that don't agree with me on movies. :P

Admittedly, I'd probably enjoy the team commentary version better than actually watching it straight.

I think the commentary is enjoyable in it's own right because of the insight you get and because Arnold doesn't know how to do movie commentary and just does a sport commentary. He does a literal commentary.

It's true, can testify D:

I swear, Im like the only person on the earth that doesn't have a Twitter account >.>

I don't either, though I somehow doubt that will make you feel better D:

Tell me, are you happy with how little he had to do in the film or do you wish he did more in the film?

Loaded question but, both D:

I'm happy with the part they had to play. SS wasn't perfect, KC could have had more time, but I was satisfied because I got what I went in for in the end D:

Sorry D:

You're a persistent one too, huh? ^^
Don't put so much pressure on poor little CCL. They'll break!
Show some mercy (`・ω・´)

*Breaks ;_;

While we're at it. What are your favorite movies then? Since you love 'em so much, maybe you could recommend something really good.

My favorite movies? Here are some of my favorites. I would say they are all good, some great, and maybe a few are masterpieces.

Total Recall (1990), Escape from New York, John Carpenter's The Thing, Alien, The Terminator, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings (though specifically out of the 3 Fellowship of the Ring is my favorite), Top Gun.

My top 5 movies are the lotr trilogy and the first two godfather films >_>

And esp agreed about fellowship, most people I know say it's boring but it's by far my favourite D:

But okay, you like the movie and that's fine. At no point did I want to insinuate that it was bad that you liked the movie.

I love it because you get to see so much of the Shire in it. Also it has the whole Fellowship and I just love Sean Bean as Boromir. I cry every single time during the scene in the forest.

I think the 3 movies are equally good, though my favorite remains the third one, for the epic battles and the scene where Sam carries Frodon on the Orodruin. They deserve their 17 (if i'm right) oscars.

On a side note, it still amazes me how deep Tolkien's universe is, and I recommend the Silmarillon and pretty much all of his other work to anyone who enjoys reading. (Galich ?)

I haven't read the Silmarillon (actually don't own it in English, but my dad has it in Polish), but I have read Unfinished Tales and some of the other post-death Tolkien collected stuff.

The Hobbit is my favorite though, but that's probably because I listened to the BBC Radio Drama of it for so many evenings when I was younger. Our library had it on tape and I would just listen to it every night while going to sleep. Can't think of how many times I've listened to it. Kinda silly, but, fond memories of my childhood.
