I know this will have impact on European politics, but it remains to be seen if other countries will follow suit.
Time will tell. In some European countries, popular votes are not a thing. The bigger ones, France and Germany, have rather vocal right-wing movements and weak leaders or leaders who would very much like to sit out this issue. I remember the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, stating that she had a hard time 'wrapping her head around' the notion of same-sex marriage and adoption on national television. She won't tackle the issue because of demurs concerning the well-being of the children she wouldn't elaborate. The German constitutional court has forced her to make concessions time and again.
I'm sure it's a war that will be won eventually, but it's still a long way off.
