Forum › Ireland becomes first country to legalise gay marriage by popular vote

I'm surprised no one made a topic about this (perhaps because it isn't related to Japan?) which is why it's a little bit late but I figured this was important. Note that Ireland was/is very much catholic even though the church had to deal with some extremely ugly scandals in the past, i.e. widespread cases of sexual abuse of children.
I know this will have impact on European politics, but it remains to be seen if other countries will follow suit.

Saw that yesterday on the news, I was also in awe because of the fact that people are devoted to Catholicism. I'm very glad to see the world changing in positive ways in my lifetime.

Being half-irish (my dad being from there), I was very emotional about this yesterday. I cried a lot, very proud of them. :)

Also this appeared in Dublin after the voting news:

I was never more in awe of the Irish than when this happened. Ireland rocks!

Australia took notice, unfortunately not only the good guys but the enemies as well.

Knowing that Australia bascially treats their adults like children... it might be a hard one to win.

Time will tell. In some European countries, popular votes are not a thing. The bigger ones, France and Germany, have rather vocal right-wing movements and weak leaders or leaders who would very much like to sit out this issue. I remember the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, stating that she had a hard time 'wrapping her head around' the notion of same-sex marriage and adoption on national television. She won't tackle the issue because of demurs concerning the well-being of the children she wouldn't elaborate. The German constitutional court has forced her to make concessions time and again.

I'm sure it's a war that will be won eventually, but it's still a long way off.

Same-Sex Marriage Is a Right, Supreme Court Rules, 5-4

5-4, just scraping by, but a win is a win.

Some serious salt in those dissents, though. Scalia's is particularly hilarious, being all "Old Man Yells At Cloud" and citing hippies, of all things.
