I don’t play the games and can’t be assed to keep track of the characters much without an actual (manga/anime) story. I know a few of them from years of fanart (Patchouli, Reimu… some other girls with funny hats…) but for the most part they’re just part of a cloud in my brain labeled “Touhou ships.” XD

Well, I never had any interest in those because:

1. They're not yuri

2. They're "stories set in the world of Touhou," not "the Touhou story," which is a distinction WITH a difference to me.

As far as I've ever understood it, Touhou is the progenitor of the "cute girl avatars in a battle game" genre that begat all your Genshins Impact and your Arks Knight and all the rest (which I also have no interest in aside from pretty yuri shipping art). It didn't have any kind of story until fans glommed on to their favorite characters and started making doujin of them.

Speaking, again, just for myself, I don't care about the interrelationships of gacha game characters, v-tubers, and the like. They're just assemblages of traits that designers expect fans to be attracted to and want to collect/follow/whatever. If the couple didn't begin in an actual context with history, continuity, and agency, they're just pretty pictures to me.

Touhou is...not a gacha game. Not remotely. It's a doujin (indie) game series of bullet hell games made by one guy and it predates gacha games as a concept by way over a decade. Maybe do a quick google search before you act smug and condescending about your superior taste

This is Utsuho's official design ... and actually, "assemblages of traits" describes it pretty well. Just not in the way you think.

Each part of her design has purpose. She's based on the three-legged crow god, Yatagarsu, and nuclear fusion. The arm canon (the "third leg") is a nuclear control rod and the gray thing on her leg is modeled after the "elephant foot" from Chernobyl. Yes, it's busy as hell (heh), but there's a lot of thought going into each character.

Don't get me started talking about Touhou, I can yap about it for days.

Holy shit do people take things personally on this site sometimes. These will be the last responses I make to any of this, because the bad-faith interpretations of what I said and pile-ons just aren’t worth the energy, and a new batch of images will be posted tonight to sweep all this away.

1. I never said it WAS a gacha game, I said that in my view it was the ancestor OF gacha games - simple non-story-based gameplay that provided a framework for a world of cute girl avatars.

2. How in the world do you interpret anything I said as being “smug” or about my “superior taste?” I went out of my way to explicitly say it simply wasn’t for me personally, and in no way disparaged you or anyone else’s love of the games or any related media.

3. I don’t HATE Touhou, JFC. I don’t care about it outside of liking the fanart and some doujin with themes that I enjoy. Not partaking in most of the media or knowing the intimate details of the vast army of characters involved is in no way the same thing as “hating” something.

4. The original sprites have absolutely nothing to do with anything I said. I’m talking about all the character design details, worldbuilding, and relationship tree-ing that have built up around the character via the fandom.

5. Sure, I in no way am discounting that the designs are deliberate and (for all I know) quite thoughtful in their detail. All the “cute girl army” type media are crafting their characters precisely to attract loyalty and interest from various types of fans.
