Forum › Yuri Visual Novel Recommendation Thread
has anyone brought up solfege? it's fairly old and unfortunately untranslated, but it's a yuri VN-slash-rhythm game where there are multiple girls (routes) to pursue. same company as the nurse love games and yumeutsutsu, actually! i'm still reading it, as a disclaimer, but i like it so far. the manga adaption of it iirc is actually here on dynasty
solfege is a classic for sure. I never even tried (bad at rhythm games), but I hear it is very polished. Unfortunately I haven't made a section for untranslated games.
Does everyone want me to add one? There are quite a few JP/CN only VNs I could recommend, but I fear most people here are not versed in the languages, considering they are on a translation site.

imo it's worth it! the audience is smaller, but not nonexistent, and i've been wanting more JP yuri games to play anyway lol. even when i find titles there's no indication of how good/worth my time they are. it'd be helpful

Very well. That section might fluctuate with potential translations coming out (oh how I yearn for thee Evermaiden TL), but with some older VNs hope is very dim.
Perhaps someone could also recommend translation software, so I may add it to the opening post for more accessibility.
Just a small start with a handful of untranslated Japanese/Chinese yuri VNs played by yours truly (except for those I didn't).
Japanese
Class Zen'in Maji de Yuri?! ~Watashi-tachi no Lez Oppai wa Anata no Mono Joshi Zen'in Shiofuki Keikaku~
This one was brought up before in this thread and my opinion has not changed. While it has its downsides, this is one of the rare yuri harem eroge out there of actual quality. It's nothing deep and I would say even lacking in the romance department, but it's sheer boldness somehow makes up for that.
Just for the love of yuri NEVER press the "mysterious white liquid" button during sex scenes. It's quite revolting, as expected of MBS Truth. They just can't help themselves.
https://vndb.org/v12404Evermaiden
Mind you I have only played this a little, as a translation was announced (and probably will never actually be finished), but what I played was great. The art is one of a kind. It's a high production yuri VN with a strong mystery focus. It reminds me a little of games like F/SN or DIVIdead, if not in plot, then it atmosphere. It is an eroge, but I didn't reach any of the sex scenes, so who knows how cringe they are?
As I can't speak for how well the mystery is resolved I will just have to go by the very positive reception to recommend it.
https://vndb.org/v31427Solfege
A VN/rhythm game hybrid and one I never played because I am horrid at the latter. However, the art/music/voice acting have always attracted me to solfege. @coolsnail can probably say more about it.
https://vndb.org/v2113Sugar,sugar,sugarcoat
A very new small indie VN. Finished it just recently and it really oozes that unique charm only indie VNs can. The plot is a bit unconventional, but in summary it's about our protagonist having to woo girls to feed the demoness she is actually in love with. Technically that would make this a harem VN, but there are some twists and turns I dare not spoil... Very cute comfy artstyle though.
https://vndb.org/v50883YumeUtsutsu Re:Idol
Short stories spin-off to the main Yumeutsutsu games, but lacking an English translation for some reason. This is an outrage! If you like the main games, you will like this.
https://vndb.org/v28201
Chinese
- Eternal Love & Unwavering Love
Sequels in the ahem... Love series? They build on the titles Symbiotic Love and Melancholy Love, however, unlike those two they haven't been translated yet. I fear they might never get one either. It is not my place to make assumptions, but it is most likely related to costs.
The first two VNs set up an incredibly shocking cliffhanger which will be resolved in these sequels. It is pure torture to be denied this conclusion. Please play this if you have any means to at all. This series is probably some of the best Chinese yuri (or tangerine as they call it I think?) out there. With the insane censorship that country experiences in recent years we should value the few explicit yuri games that get released all the more.

I'm making this comment as a mental note of sorts, because otherwise these small Flowers-related wants will once again get devoured by the cruel immanence of my daily routine.
Plan #1: I've been meaning to make a few image upload requests for a while now, because Dynasty is seriously lacking in not just quality FLOWERS art, but pretty much any FLOWERS art. There are a lot of genuinely beautiful fan works I've discovered over the years, so I've amassed a solid collection, if I say so myself.
A few of my favourites:
[Spoiler warning: do not open these links if you haven't finished reading the entirety of the Flowers tetralogy.]
- Printemps, Ete, Automne, Hiver (you need to be logged into your Pixiv account to view the Hiver one, likely because of a spoiler)
No matter how many times I look at these four artworks side by side, each time they evoke some rather intense “religious painting” vibes. It's not just about their beauty, but also about the feeling of reverence I experience.
The first few in this collection are absolutely lovely, but where this gallery starts to get genuinely crazy to me is with B&W pieces. Among those, №3, 6, 7, and 9 manage to make me a little emotional every time I look through them. It's as if there's a link between mine and this artist's mind in terms of how we both seem to understand specific narrative aspects and some of the story beats. Pure madness.
Plan #2: The last FLOWERS live event in April came and went, so I'm going to gather, sort and share all of the noteworthy info about it the next few days.

In other late news...
I do absolutely judge and analyse every volume of a novel series individually. It is important to take in a long series both on the micro and macro level in my opinion.
I wasn't saying at all that analysis of individual parts of an overarching story isn't important. I was instead making a semi-serious jab at some people's overall position that FLOWERS’ “volumes” could ever be fully or even sufficiently understood as “self-contained” stories connected merely by plot threads, and not by overlapping layers of thematic reoccurrences and repetitions. The fact that they're individually distinct doesn't mean they are separate from one another in any real way. They're a single story which was split into multiple parts largely because of initial production constraints, not because of a grand artistic vision that dictated for it to be produced like this, even if InoGre definitely managed to find a way to make it an artistic boon rather than a burden. They simply don't make sense without one another in a variety of large and small ways.
(And I wish I was strawmanning, but, unfortunately, I've seen this conviction play out in the most bizarre ways on multiple occasions. One person even ended up recommending their friend/acquaintance to start with Automne, as the supposedly “best one”, in what seemed to be a hope that they'd just bruteforce their way through the story and manage to piece everything together from clues and hints. Suffices to say that the experience seemed to be rather unsatisfactory, because a great portion of narrative parallels went over the victim's head, while they also kept making incorrect assumptions and coming to incorrect conclusions about various things simply because they lacked necessary context.)

Uugghhhhhh that was so gooooooooooooooooood!
Studio Élan have outdone themselves once again.
This story grips your heartstrings, churns your stomach and grabs your attention refusing to let go.
Devoured it in a single sitting and was utterly enchanted the whole way through.
And now I have to just. sit for a while. Digest.
Definitely mind the content warnings. Seriously~

I have been requesting Flowers art on the image section a lot in the past and my nominations never got uploaded so I gave up. Instead the mods picked the same generic popular non-yuri anime of the week yuri ships every single time. It's quite depressing.

Automne very much is the best individual FLOWERS VN in my opinion and it is not even close. So good taste on this random person. Not so bright ideas though.
Fundamentally I always say that you need to play/watch/read things in order. No exception.

I have been looking forward to this since Please Be Happy. Elan is starting to actually become a powerhouse in the yuri VN scene. Although 70k words is actually rather short. I still have to finish Clover Reset before I can start on this, unfortunately.

It took me about 8-9 hrs to play through it, letting voices play out. It did feel like it was over in a flash but that's mostly because i was glued to the screen and at the edge of my seat the whole time xD The story itself is very well paced imo, doesn't drag or rush at any point.

Brevity is the soul of wit, as they say. It's just strange that I have seen plenty of fanfiction with 100k words plus. Not to mention the enldess word count of Japanese Light Novels. Elan has gone longer and longer as time went on. It's hard to remember that Highway Blossoms was fairly short.
I am not too fond of overdone self-harm and edgey content for the sake of edge, but I assume ATIB has more substance than that. I must add it to the list right away.

the self-harm is necessitated by the whole blood magic deal of the premise but it's definitely not "edgy" in that way. They way ATIB touches on grief, depression and suicidal ideation is stomach churningly well done actually. reading it made me legit uncomfortable at times bc it was more relatable than i'd care to admit

It's always those with real life issues who seem to be drawn to this kind of content... I hope you are doing better now.

Oh totally, no worries there~ It's simply to the credit of the writing when ppl with those experiences can relate to it in a visceral way like that

I take this comment as a sign it will get better then. Still haven't managed to get much farther than the very start into it after everything so far just seemed so wrong after the first two parts...

It's not hard to surpass Printemps, the weakest of the 4. And while Ete does engage in some melancholy, Automne revels in it. Usually which one is the "best" for fans comes down to whether they prefer the more light hearted dynamics of Ete or the deep melancholy of Automne.

The Steam Summer Sale may be over, but there is still more good news everyone!
Team ANPIM, the dev team which made several small yuri VNs has released them as a VN collection, this time all themed around adult yuri slice of life!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3601840/Adult_Life_Yuri_Bundle_by_Team_ANPIM/
Four stories with cute/philosophical adult yuri in them.
The best part? It's completely FREE, just like the publisher Quill Yuri's other titles like Lachesis or Atropos and The Final Prize is Soup. Their only paid game is Death Becomes You (another good yuri VN). So while you are at it, may as well add their full library to your account.
Anyway, the compilation's stories are:
My Dream Is To Be a Model, Not a Maid!
An aspiring model spills coffee on a rich lady and instantly gets turned into a maid as compensation. Hijinks ensue.
There’s No Way I’d Fall in Love With a Womanizer, Right?
The kind protagonist helps out a pretty woman on a drunken bender and instantly feels attracted to her. Turns out she is a womanizer though and from here on it's a cat and mouse game about trying not to get swept up by her.
The Moon That Fell for the Star
A convenience store clerk helps out a strange woman and lets her crash at her home. And they became roommates!
Love Goes Toward Love
Cafe worker falls in love with pretty lady from the rival cafe. And on top of that a love triangle? The drama!

So yeah, I've sent checks notes one hundred and fifty pieces of FLOWERS fan art by a couple dozen of artists six weeks ago. So far only two of them were uploaded. Though I'm disappointed with the rate of uploads, it's not like I can do anything about it. I get that every week the site's admins have to add dozens of images for dozens of yuri fandoms (even if a whole bunch of the popular ones are largely based off of headcanon, let's be real for a second here).
As for the live event, I don't have much to share on it. At first, I wanted to start by looking for interesting info in the Facebook fan group, but Facebook hates me for some reason, because it repeatedly keeps blocking all my new accs almost immediately. Fortunately, I was able to talk to an aquaintance of mine, who've managed to visit the concert. Here's a rough oultine of the event based on their personal account:
- Only Suoh, Nazuka Kaori that is, was present on stage in person. All other actresses, whose characters appear in the story, were present only as pre-recorded voices.
- Apparently, Okamoto Rie visited the event itself, but, as I understood it, didn't go on stage for some reason.
- Originally, I had assumed that Suoh and Mayuri would be narrating the story, but in reality it was a different pair of girlfailures: Suoh and Erika. (Considering how highly in demand Sakura-san is as a seiyuu, it's not suprising that she wasn't there. Ah, shame. With her being a rabid, unhinged himejoshi, FLOWERS had been her yuri dream project for a decade.)
- Apparently, there was a lot of really sweet SuohEri material still. Gah! Erika, why did you abandon your nakama... It would've been so much sweeter with you and her together!
- At least Yuzuriha and Nerine got wed in the course of the story. "Wdym 'at least'?", one might ask. I wish I knew lol. My assumption is that other girls got married as well, but the initial explanation by my informant felt unclear, so I asked again whether my interpretation was correct, but got no response to it.
- The fan book that was distributed during the event also contains the second part of the story. It's mostly about Suoh and Mayuri living their working adult life together, with Suoh starting her career at an old, distinguished bookstore.
Ah, something I always forget to do.
I have a big collection of Rokka-En (FLOWERS' dorm building exterior and interior) photos to share. Wish they were mine, but alas, they're a friend's. She visited the place last year in late February, so the gardens don't look very scenic in this set, but it's still pretty picturesque.
https://imgbox.com/g/k5rghC0QKB
She visited the mansion this spring as well and made a bunch of great shots, but I'll have to ask her permission to show those here (already did that for the set above), and I'll have to upload them somewhere, since she shared them directly in a Flowers fan server.
In other news...
Automne very much is the best individual FLOWERS VN in my opinion and it is not even close.
I find it curious that your attitude towards the topic of having opinions has seemingly shifted in the last couple of years.

Less a recommendation and more a review, but through the Hella Yuri Steam curator I noticed Eclipse: Special Forces releasing today and immediately downloaded the demo, because what was I supposed to do? Ignore the monogendered butch heaven with enigmatic, masked rabble-rousers? Pft. Anyway, I sadly have important criticism and nowhere else to share, so brace yourself, this is going to be a long one:
The very first thing you'll notice upon starting a new game is the ... suboptimal UI. The textbox is awkwardly off-centre and has no adjustable transparency, the inset character portrait of unseen characters (like the viewpoint) is lacking a frame, so the transparent sprite is just jarringly cut off, and the whole interface has weird side margins on my 16:9 screen, although the rest of the game doesn't. Remember this, it'll be important later.
The game is held in an mostly colourless style reminiscent of Synergia (or perhaps The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy At All) which I very much enjoy, but which makes the permanently visible menu buttons on top the text box stand out even more. I really, really don't want to be mean to a newly released Yuri VN, but I was reminded of E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy's and perhaps even Cruelty Squad's interface design.
But let's focus on the story. After a brief nightmare sequence, the MC wakes in bed - right next to her partner. Whom, as she will be adamant shortly thereafter, is not dating. Nobody buys it. And here I noticed a pleasant surprise: the game makes use of animated manwha panels and inset sound-effects. That's super stylish, and imho a totally underutilized aspect of VNs and webcomics. Overall, the art-style is very appealing. The font, however, breaks the first opportunity it gets (at the word "café").
The opening is very economic with providing exposition - not too much, not too intrusive, not leaving out important worldbuilding questions. The setting is refreshingly egyptian-inspired in terminology.
This is probably the point to address the translation. I have seen a single rumour that the game was machine translated. Without any further evidence, I'll treat is as rumour. To me, the quality of the prose was ... acceptable. Not unbearable, but clearly with room for improvement, in a way reminiscent of the original localization of Lobotomy Corporation, minus the rampant typos. I wanted to compare the English with the original Korean, but there's no apparent language toggle, neither in-game nor through Steam. Welp, my Korean sucks anyway, so...
Within 30-45 minutes the prologue (and thus the demo) ended. It's apparently 8 out of 85 "episodes" (=scenes) of the whole game, which presumably is something like 7h in full. There were enough open narrative threads that I'm actually somewhat worried some of those might be rushed, underdeveloped or simply dropped to fit into that time, but given how much movies can do in a fraction of that time, YMMV.
Now for the big reason I haven't yet purchased the full game, and what I really wish I could put into a review: the game has terrible performance.
I know, I never expected that complaint about a VN either, a genre famously consisting of static pictures, but ... I played on a rather thin laptop, but it plays all my other games flawlessly. But during this game, it got hot. Really hot. I had to throw in a break when my fans were close to lift-off. Now remember my UI gripes above? Turns out this VN is made in Unity. Not RenPy, not TyranoScript or any other VN engine, not even something custom made. But Unity. And whilst performant Unity games exist, I believe this is the reason for the main shortcomings.
Overall, I'd recommend waiting a bit, unless you want to support the dev with buying day one. Basically all my criticism can be patched, and hopefully will be.

I do not understand your point. Did I not, in very visible letters, write "IN MY OPINION"? Is this a malfunction on my screen? A glitch in the system?
I'm sorry if you were not trying to get a dig at me, but your dejected shrugging implies some form of disapproval of my behaviour. Explain, if you would...

I have been keeping an eye on this one's development for a long time. One thing I want to immediately add is that this goes way beyond "butch" girls. Loathe as I am to use terms like "reverse trap" (no really, I despise this term), it mostly captures the idea. This artstyle is basically BL art, but the artist decided to call the boys female and called it a day. I have no issues with androgynous designs mind you, but this is stretching even my broad spectrum.
Of course art is not a make-or-break it thing for me. Writing takes that spot for VNs.
which makes the permanently visible menu buttons on top the text box stand out even more. I really, really don't want to be mean to a newly released Yuri VN, but I was reminded of E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy
Probably the most obscure insult I have ever witnessed, but it evokes a clear image haha

I was always confused by the claims that Unity games have terrible performance, but it turns out that most of the Unity games I played are considered better performing. I believe UsoNatsu, a very good recent yuri VN, also operates in Unity. It was also a performance drain before they patched it early on. Interesting.

Yes, this is a legitimate script patch for the English release of Printemps. So far, it alleviates only the most frustrating aspects of the official localisation: missing lines, one minor scripting oversight, and a single case of a misnomer. The final goal is to eventually iron out all of the small stuff like typos and occasionally funky grammar.

Don't worry, I'm batshit insane, but not necessarily stupid in a conventional sense. I had sent those as a single archive with proper folder structure and credits for all of the artists. Even then, I had been politely waiting for almost two weeks before contacting Orange Pekoe and asking whether my request had been received at all.

I hope that we'll eventually have it, but it will probably take a very long time for it to appear in places one should not talk about. Unless one of my partners in crime will grace us with a scan, which is probably not going to happen. Cause those books are expensive and precious as hell...

My dejected reaction was a semi-humorous observation of what seems to be a shift in your mentality and attitude, which, if it's really happening, I happen to appreciate. So I would say that you should consider this to be a weird dig at you only if you still genuinely stand by what some of the things you had written here precisely two summers ago. Well, maybe not by "what". It was mostly about tone of some of your messages. Tone which had made me cry out "god, I don't want to deal with this!" and had finally made me eschew the hope of having any sincere conversation about Flowers in this forum. A conversation I would be more willing to have then if I were better equipped for it as I do now, but back then it felt like a bit too much, a bit too frustrating and alienating.
(Fyi, I'm not writing this expecting any kind of consolation or attempting any kind of gross guilt trip. Just finally choosing to voice those feelings.)

Wasn't the translation already fixed? A double fix. Truly the double band-aid of writing.

Scanning without cutting out pages is unfortunately pretty hard, so I see the problem.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but I am neither ashamed of anything I wrote about FLOWERS nor did I change my mind in any way. And I have never had a different opinion than the one stated which curiously gave you the impression that I changed.
Tone is irrelevant to me, I know I can be rather blunt. Judge me by the content of my posts, not their "tone", if you will.
Your uh.. "alienation" based on normal discussion of the material seems to be more of a you issue, rather than something I did. That's my perspective. Perhaps you do not discuss content quite this intensely most of the time? If you cannot engage with the flaws of something you love, then how strong is your love really? That is something that might be worth considering. I love FLOWERS. And I can see that it's not perfect and I can admit to myself when something in the series disappoints me. I also never once claimed my view is the correct one.
That's all.
