Man, those MTL samples seem even worse than the dubious Arioto translations, which I slogged through.
「I’m in pain, though.」
「You do that.」
I don't know why but that just made me laugh so hard. Like "yeah you do that, go ahead be in pain" lol.
I don't know how you guys managed to read so much of it. To me, I just feel like all I'm getting from it is, "oh, they kissed in chapter 34," or, "oh, Miyagi gave her a necklace in chapter 79," but nothing more.
That's pretty much exactly how it felt reading the whole thing. It really is an embarrassingly bad translation and, to me at least literally sounds like a robot. Which I guess it essentially is. My inner voice while I was reading it was just completely monotone. But I think it just goes to show how good the story as a whole is that so many of us suffered through it just to be able to see what would happen next.
Yay! You're at Chapter 80 now!
We're only about 40 chapters away from probably the best part of the whole story. Seriously can't wait till we get there, I'm super excited to read a proper translation of it.
And before I forget, Happy Birthday to Miyagi Shiori.
Here's a really cute picture of the two of them. I tried posting it myself but couldn't figure that shit out.

Cute! Great job capturing Miyagi's grumpiness.

Lol, I knew I could count on you.
DrJamesFox I found a version without the sample mark on it! :D

Also I've noticed Miyagi in the light novel appears much less grumpy than in the manga. It's interesting to see two slightly different interpretations of her character.

I enjoy the manga for giving us a visual representation of the story but I don't think it's ever going to really be able to capture the written story as it is. I'm kind of viewing it as an alternate telling of the story which is still fun to read.
Amawashi Chapter 81: https://amawashigroup.wordpress.com/2024/09/27/part-81-sendai-san-is-selfish-i
Miyagi's abandonment are probably the biggest single issue in their relationship. Even still in the current JP chapters. They're slowly accumulating ways to ease Miyagi's fear of being abandoned but it's still causing Miyagi to hold back on intimacy at times.
But that's not something that can be easily overcome. Even one day when they both have rings on their fingers (I can dream), Miyagi will probably still grapple with fears that Sendai will come to grow bored of being married to her.

I found Shuukura fascinating because of its unique and disturbing concept, where a character buys his classmate every week. This raises profound questions about the nature of human relationships and about power dynamics. The mixture between the absurd and the real creates a disturbing atmosphere that captivates, even if some aspects of the story are morally difficult to digest. I would like to know what others think about the way these themes are approached.
This applies up to where I am in my translations.
I don't know, I think the 5k yen is exactly as the title says: an excuse for them to spend time together. Rather than creating a power imbalance for the sake of abuse, both of them use it as a wall to hide behind in order to avoid getting hurt. Miyagi's orders and behaviors are pretty eccentric and cruel, but nothing she does is to inflict pain on Sendai (even if it ends up being the result sometimes). None of this is really to justify Miyagi's actions, in that Sendai absolutely has every right to leave her. She's simply afraid of being abandoned, and a common tactic is to "hurt before you can get hurt," which is exactly what Miyagi tends to do.
But I digress. I think the 5k yen / buying her classmate part is actually one of the least morally questionable parts about their relationship, lol. It's simply used as an easy excuse to deny their growing feelings of attachment to each other and a tangible way to show this wall between them. They're both unreliable narrators, but they both realized early on that Sendai isn't coming over to Miyagi's place for the 5k yen. It is, however, the foundation their very relationship exists on. Even Miyagi issuing her orders isn't necessarily because she thinks, "I paid for it, therefore I'm entitled to it," but because she believes Sendai doesn't value their relationship the same way - there's no reason for her to. She may not be in it for the money, but there was something she wants that Miyagi can't (or won't let herself) figure out.
Miyagi's orders are both her way of keeping Sendai to herself and so she can hold "control" over what they do. It makes herself feel safe that she can "control" how Sendai will react. It (surely) wouldn't hurt as much if Sendai abandoned her because Miyagi did something horrible to her rather than have Sendai leave for no reason. Miyagi wants to be the one to "decide" when that happens and how that happens, because it's (supposedly) always easier to deal with loss when you know it's coming.

Your use of "disturbing atmosphere" and "morally difficult to digest" doesn't at all fit the way I see Shuukura.
Just like Angela AKA Sierra, I don't see the 5000 yen as anything other than an excuse for them to spend time together. It doesn't create any actual power dynamics because of both the rules they establish and because all of Miyagi's orders are created with the consideration that Sendai can leave if she doesn't want to follow an order.
That's why Miyagi often issues such innocuous orders...because she really just wants to spend time together and is afraid of going too far and ruining that.
Being able to get both their POVs shows us they constantly think about what the other is thinking and try to avoid taking actions the other will dislike. This makes the atmosphere far from "disturbing" and actually closer to "cute"...in a way. They want to get closer to each other but go about it so cautiously (and clumsily) because they don't want to displease the other or do something that will change their relationship too much (because the unknown is scary).
There's this erratic method of slowly progressing their relationship as they navigate around potential pitfalls (both real and imaginary) that makes this work so compelling to me. It often turns what might otherwise be a mundane interaction into something that feels meaningful. And the author does a masterful job of consistently stringing us along with these types of interactions.

I felt like we were hitting a lull, and then along comes comes chapter 80. This series keeps hitting those moments of tension like nothing else can. The gay chicken continues onwards.

Anybody who's read the story should remember this was totally expressed the time that she dumped popcorn and soda on Sendai. She was literally trying to do exactly what you said. Hurt Sendai so that she would leave her on her own specifically because of something that Miyagi did rather than something else out of her control.
try to avoid taking actions the other will dislike
Like I just said, there is at least one instance where Miyagi specifically tried to do something that Sendai wouldn't like. But damn if it didn't make for a really cute point in the story. I think it was the first time Sendai actually went out of her way to try and continue their relationship. Showing that, by that point in the story, she was already really reliant on Miyagi.

This story is kind of like the tide, it ebbs and flows. It brilliantly weaves through highs and lows constantly leaving us with little cliffhangers that makes you look forward to the next chapter. Lol, not trying to sound too poetic here but I think that's the best way to explain it.
Yay! Amawashi Part 82 https://amawashigroup.wordpress.com/2024/09/27/part-82-sendai-san-is-selfish-ii
I'm surprised this line actually made me snort a little: "Besides, I was a human with a heart, too—caring about someone wasn’t anything unusual."
Part of me wants to say "do you really Miyagi? Because it seems you try really hard to avoid showing it."
But the other part knows her abandonment issues makes her terrified of showing affection for fear of Sendai either rejecting her or growing bored of her and leaving. It's a good thing that she found Sendai, who's patient as they slowly work through these issues and grow closer.
I found where Miyagi decided to run away to be interesting because it's the opposite of what I'd do.
Miyagi felt a bit of hesitation about having to deal with Sendai's mom likely answering the door but powered through it. That'd be by far the hardest part of this visit for me and where I might give up.
But then after clearing that hurdle, Miyagi psyches herself out that Sendai might be upset about her visit and tries to leave the bag on the door and run away. Because Sendai rejecting her is by far Miyagi's biggest fear.
But of course, Sendai is super happy that Miyagi's showing she cares about her enough to come check in on her when she's sick. Wouldn't be surprised if that big gay brain of Sendai's had been having fever dreams about Miyagi.

Yeah that was the one time I was actually pretty mad at Miyagi. Reasons behind it aside, that was basically bullying and was super mean. I wish Miyagi had sincerely apologized for that but now it's water under the bridge.
I'm glad that they usually try to avoid doing things the other would dislike, because it'd be hard to read this story if stuff like that soda incident was the norm instead of an exception.

I can relate to Miyagi way too much in this chapter. The whole thing about visiting somebody unannounced and then having to likely deal with her cold mother would just be incredibly awkward.
"It's a good thing that she found Sendai"
There should be a word for this particular type of story. Much like AdaShima it's about two girls who are mentally broken in different ways magically finding their perfect partner. It's just such a heartwarming thing to read. Knowing that they're pretty much destined for each other because they probably wouldn't be able to find another partner that would be willing to put up with their shit lol.
"tries to leave the bag on the door and run away."
This is totally something I would do lol. Like okay I've gone enough out of my comfort zone, this is too much now.
It was nice to see the rare thoughtful Miyagi this chapter.

We're now up to 3 fanart for Shuukura on Dynasty: https://dynasty-scans.com/doujins/a_story_about_buying_a_classmate_once_a_week_5000_yen_for_an_excuse_to_spend_time_together/images
If you find any nice fanart of the girls, submit an upload request. Or post it in this thread and I'll submit the request.
More fanart is another way to spread the good word about Shuukura!
Yay! Part 82 83: https://amawashigroup.wordpress.com/2024/09/30/part-83-sendai-san-is-selfish-iii :D
Super cute part. It's parts like this that make me wish Miyagi wouldn't always act so cold towards Sendai. But we know one of the reasons Miyagi acts that way is she thinks if she gives Sendai an inch, she'll try to take a mile:
"If I treated her more kindly, things like this would probably happen all the time."
I forgot Sendai said she wanted Miyagi to get sick so she could take care of her. Another crazy Sendai thought that, when Miyagi eventually gets sick, leads to an even crazier thought along the lines of "I wish Miyagi was always sick so I could always take care of her".
That's if I'm remembering that correctly...sometimes I mix up what happens in the story with what happens in my daydreams.

Another crazy Sendai thought
I swear, one day when this translation is much farther ahead I really want to compile a collection of all of Sendai's crazy, unhinged quotes. She really has some great ones throughout the story. From wanting to fall through the pits of hell, to destroying everyone on the earth except her and Miyagi, to being able to see inside Miyagi's body lol. The girl is seriously crazy and borderline yandere and I absolutely love it.
Yay! Part
8283
Sounds like someone wants to throw hands.
The interlude for volume three follows immediately after this chapter. Historically, I've left the interludes and extras for last/as last priority, but I'm going to work on it first this time before moving on to part 84. The last two interludes felt more like standalone chapters (volume 2's in particular was a retelling of events from a chapter that happened way before it), but this one reads more like part 83.5.
This also means we are halfway through yet another book.
Also wondering if I should start a Discord server for my translations (of course, discussions about spoilers would be welcome in separate channels as well), but I feel like it'd be a total ghost town. And not entirely sure about how well that'd go considering there's already a ShuuKura unofficial server, but we'll see. Any thoughts?

I don't see how anyone would take issue with you starting a Discord server for your translations. If the Shuukura server mods are going to be hypocrites... fools... severely misguided in their belief that translations shouldn't be discussed (despite almost everyone reading them), then the only option is to create another place where you can freely discuss those translations.
I'd definitely pop in there with regularity, but I'd still post here often since I prefer the forum format and it keeps Shuukura just a tiny bit more visible for others.

As I said, I think you should go for it. Naturally it might be a ghost town at first but you got to start somewhere. And it doesn't necessarily have to be any kind of direct competition to the other unofficial Discord. It would more specifically be a Discord relating to your particular translation. And as James said, if they don't like it, fuck 'em. I'm paraphrasing of course LOL
You could also see if the Dynasty Discord mods would be open to having a thread for your translation. Built-in audience.
