RGU/AoU are supernatural dramas and metaphorical dramas at the same time. Once Anthy has worked out her issues - Utena's already grown up - Utena won't be just a car that Anthy alone has the keys to. Utena's waiting for that to happen, and in the meantime, they're going to see the world - the world Anthy's been kept away from. Anthy was the Object everyone fought over, right? Well, now, Utena's the Object and Anthy's the Subject, and she's very, very damaged. Don't forget, Utena's not the only car-ified fighter - it's not forever, any more than being a sword cabinet is for Anthy. Also, as Akio showed, even death isn't forever in RGU/AoU. I think troubled love stories, like Madoka/Homura or Manabu/Yukari or Scott/Ramona are better stories. I keep bringing in SPvTW because it was directly inspired by Utena, Scott is clearly Utena and Ramona is Anthy or a near as doesn't matter.
