Technically, it was confirmed that Bubblegum and Marceline used to date but ended up breaking up on bad terms some time before the show in an interview. As the seasons went on, they reconnected and got closer, and at some point before the finale they started dating again.

Of course, them kissing on screen was the first confirmation that they were dating within the show.

What Rye said. The intent of the art is that their dynamic and body language when kissing changes over 3 months, likely the first 3 months of dating. In the first month they're probably going to kiss in a moment, it's still a bit awkward for them so there's a moment of hesitation before the kiss. Second month they're more relaxed and kissing while still being a bit reserved. The third month they're really into and are now passionately kissing with fiery intensity.

The first half of the series really isn't that bad. I mean certain parts are definitely painful, but there's plenty of dark humor to help lighten things up a little. In terms of truly understanding and appreciating the characters it's a must.

It's all fun and games until the tongue comes out.
