I never played a pokemon game - and I guess I wont anytime soon since I have no 3ds.. How come they never make these for the main consoles like the wii / u / switch?

1. The version only determines what kind of Pokemon you get from areas. Some Pokemon are exclusive to Sun, some are exclusive to Moon and some Pokemon are common to both. You can still play as male or female in both versions.

2. Pokemon has always been in the handheld, probably due to the fact that it's much accessible that way, especially since some Pokemon only appears at certain times of the day.
