So I'm an old guy, and I can remember my mom getting these catalogs in the mail back in the '70s that were basically just cheap crap. Stuff like nose-hair trimmers and whoopee cushions and novelty shot glasses and so on. Just a bunch of tawdry bric-a-brac and low-rent beauty items and "As Seen On TV!" stuff that no stores would ever stock so they had to sell 'em via mail-order catalogs.
And they always had an ad for a vibrator. Like, an actual phallus-shaped vibrator. The ad copy never actually mentioned anything even REMOTELY sexual, of course. It was always about the "healthful benefits of a soothing massage" and "recommended by doctors" and so on. And the models ALWAYS had it held to their face. Usually holding it with two hands, and looking like they were snuggling with it.
So maybe the girl in the comic grew up reading those catalogs...
