@Miki, oh I see. Sadly, no low profile card will be a good gaming card. You'll be stuck with old games or some indies.

"Stuck" is such an awful term. There are a lot of good indies that stand shoulder to shoulder with big-budget games quite well, and many old games remain good and relevant even more than six months after release, as unbelievable as that may seem.

You could try playing league of legends if you like MOBA; the game is free and you can play it on a toaster. And if you don't mind playing with the worst community a game ever had
Instead of buying an expensive pc, you can build one yourself, it's less expensive and you can choose any material you want (a good graphic card, a good processor ? cause i3 is like, crappy).

@ Utoptia - no need for octopi. just need two handy pianists or piano for 4 hands

Well ciega, I can buy that.
Now ... how about this \(◎o◎)/

@Neko I heard its pretty nice there. Enjoy your trip. :D

@Galich I'm glad you're safe. I've never understood how people forget their glasses especially if they really can't see without them. I see how people forget that they're wearing them. My friend forgot and jumped straight into a 12 foot pool and lost his glasses down there. Someone else had to dive for them because he couldn't see them. Personally, I can't see anything clearly without mine. I almost walked straight into some barbed wire when I was out in the woods and in the creek. After someone pointed it out I still couldn't really see it.

@Anon It's cool that you know your blood type even cooler that you're an universal blood donor. I haven't the foggiest of ideas on what type I am. If I were to get into an accident where I'd need donated blood I doubt I'd be conscious. Plus I'm pretty sure since O- is the universal blood is carried on ambulances (at least where I live).

@ Miki Oh, that sucks. Isn't there a way for you to find a part-time job or something like that ?

Old games are still very good. I still play total annihilation, cossacks, the first call of duty and ... championsheep rally (I bet no one knows this game lmao) and it's as good as it used to be.

I don't have a gaming rig that'll run the latest and greatest AAA titles, and I don't need it. I'd honestly rather play Brutal DOOM than the remake. Witcher 3 would be nice, but I can live without Geralt being wryly sardonic for about a hundred hours. Minetest is a lovely open-source (and free) alternative to Minecraft I'm enjoying a lot. Civ games? No problem! I mean you really need the horsepower to play Hearthstone or Europa Universalis?

Maybe "stuck" is an awful term, but it's the only one that popped into my head while writing the post. I used it because you get limited by your GPU. There are plenty of indie games that will run awful even on a low end GPU as well.

I mean, I bought an Ultrabook recently and I expect to play Doom 2 and X-COM: UFO Defense on it. I would say I am stuck with old games pretty much. Civ V will run at low FPS, but that's fine for that game, but even something like Doom 3 will still run poorly on it.

I'd like to be able to play Fallout New Vegas on it but no chance of that happening. But I got an Ultrabook because I have two gaming PCs (two different locations) and I will just use Steam In Home Streaming.

The XCOM games run terrible on a lot of systems, honestly.

XCOM 2 runs poorly, but XCOM EU might run alright on low. It didn't on my Surface Pro but it might on this new one. I would love to be able play to XCOM 2 on it but alas.

X-COM UFO Defense will have no problem because DOSBOX. Or using OpenXCom. Probably OpenXCom this time.

At least I should be able to play the old Fallouts on it as well.

Zujin Do you run civ V with direct X 9 or 10 ? Up until recently, I had a crappy computer (i3, 4GB of ram, a shitty graphic card) but I could run civ 5 with decent fps on direct X9. That's good to hear some people here play civ 5 by the way, such a great game.

Miki Oh, that really sucks. I feel bad for asking now _ (._.) _

@Utopia, I use DX10. I think the touch screen controlled version of it requires it. That's how I played it on my Surface Pro.

I've seen people with pretty current systems complain that XCOM:EU runs like a pig on quaaludes, and XCOM2 really isn't much better optimized. Quality game mechanics, but not the greatest programming in the business.

XCOM 2 is much worse. It gives my system pause and I have 980Ti. Not sure what Firaxis did with it to have it perform like it does, but oh well, love that game so much. I haven't had many issues with XCOM EU, but it has an issue when the Muton Berserkers attack. For some reason the frame rate just drops and stutters like crazy. EW fixed it up a bit but it is still there. Not sure if the 360 or PS3 versions have it. I have not tried it on a min spec system. It played on my gen 1 Surface Pro but I had to set it to low. (Runs better than the tablet version at least lol).

Oh and the PS Vita version was so bad. That had the worst performance ever. I regret buying it, like I regret Borderlands 2 for Vita.

Edit: If I sound defensive, well I love XCOM lol

Even though it's pretty outdated now, I've pretty much have had FRAPS installed on my computers since the mid-2000s.

PC games are a pain to get running properly... kinda why I now just go almost all out with CPU and GPU. I used to be able to play games on lowest settings but no more lol

At least no more editing config.sys or autoexec.bat.

Don't worry about being defensive. I'm defensive about gatekeeping so we're even.

The idea that you have to get the latest and most powerful gaming hardware to have a good time is ridiculous to me, and counter to the whole idea of gaming being fun. I find a lot of the time playing the latest, most demanding games that push the envelope and then tape a new envelope on the end so it can push that too, tends to be treated as a status symbol, and you're not a Real Gamer unless you keep up with the kids with the newest toys. Which is a huge disservice to the real amazing gems in the indie world that get passed over as a result. And that's a real shame since there's a huge amount of great stuff that gets passed over via that approach.

I don't think anyone needs to have the latest and most powerful unless they want to. I didn't mean to insinuate earlier that one needs to have a modern GPU or else all one can play are with "bad" games.

I mean I hated the new Doom and just fired up Doom 2 instead. I would prefer to be stuck on an island with just Doom 2 instead of Doom 2016.

Have you tried the Brutal DOOM Starter Pack? It's basically the same graphics as the original games, but with modern mechanics, rebalanced weapons (the starting rifle is useful through the whole game due to being the most accurate), and entirely new levels and (nominal) storyline. It's a good experience.

@Miki, if you didn't have a half-sized case, then that would be simple. I don't know the AMD equivalent, but the GTX 750 Ti would be perfect for you. Only draws power from the motherboard, so you don't even need a mid end PSU. This makes it work with almost any computer. You probably could get something a bit older, like a GTX460 or GTX260 even, as I think they would be cheaper, but those are all fullsize cards. Wish I could help you some way since I really like PC gaming. V:

@Nezchan, I have not tried Brutal Doom Starter Pack, and that's because I am not a fan of Brutal Doom. I last played it in 2013. To me it just wasn't what I wanted out of Doom. It's why I hate the new Doom just borrowing concepts from Brutal Doom and making them required (the dumb Glory Kills).

@Miki, I saw the picture of your computer and you weren't wrong about anything. Your computer can only take half-height video cards.

Also, it seems that there are some GTX 750Tis that are low profile so I stand corrected. However, the one I found so far is a two slotter. :( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125680

Edit: Found one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127836

Edit 2: Might be too wide though. You would need to mod the cooler. :(

Edit 3: The video card you have also uses slower RAM. I am pretty sure there is some AMD card that would fit your needs but I would have to do some research to see what it is.

Well Miki, I wish everyone had watched a few videos on youtube about PC. It's such a pain in the ass when you have to explain everything to a complete neophyte lmao. My little sister doesn't even know how to type "@" on the keyboard ...

It's a good thing you ran into Zujin, he might help you to get your pc performance higher.

I think the only possible choices to replace that graphics card will be marginal updates. Maybe something with GDDR5 VRAM instead of DDR3 might be the best improvement, but that would be so marginal it would be a complete waste of money. If only the case was a little bit bigger. ;_;

Edit: And don't worry about it being boring. This is my bread and butter and what I love talking about the most... computer hardware.

But yeah do what you need to do. As nice as a graphics card can be, in the end it's not really all that important.

Got to agree with Zujin, as long as you can play correctly, graphics are a plus. Even if being able to play guild wars 2 in ultra is something I really value

And there are "recent" game your computer can handle I think.
And once again, you ain't bothering us ! ┻━┻︵ヽ(`Д´)ノ︵ ┻━┻

@Blackkitty hello! Doing pretty well so far, decided to spend today in my bed with a book(s). I gues it's another lazy Sunday. And how are ya doing so far?

@ZuljinRayor all of this technobabble, hearing it makes me realize that I don't have many tech savvy friends. Well, it's not everyone's cup of tea I guess. I, on the other hand, like history, so i guess we wouldn't have all that many topics to talk about.

I'd very strongly recommend refraining from showing anything remotely resembling support for Sgt Mark. He's a despicable person. He's had numerous incidents in the past where he used other peoples' resources in Brutal Doom without crediting them. And even worse he actively encouraged someone to commit suicide when the guy was really depressed.
