Despite having some reservations about this one as a system (Lily doesn't believe that even in this Muuko and Mortis "died", it feels like it's just their way to explain that their way of being has changed significantly, from having firm boundaries on who fronts, and when they switch, to co-fronting and being cooperative as a system instead of jockeying for control), we still really liked it...

Lily can't expect perfect representation on these topics (not that there's some kind of DID Template that everyone has, situations differ) but the way Nyamu shows true compassion and care for Muuko and Mortis even after being told they're dead still really really shone through to us. Too many series treat former/dormant/disappeared alters as not important or not the same as, heaviest airquotes, a "real person" and that's the most upsetting way to treat it of all (we kinda also feel this way about stories about clones or digital duplicates and such, but that's expanding the scope of Lily's point way too far teehee).

Anyway thank you Nyamu for caring, even if we think you're falling for some classic Ave Mujica dramatisation :3c

I only know Bang Dream through doujins. It increasingly seems trippy.

A lot of the JP and CN fandom seem to have misinterpreted what actually happened to Mutsumi-chan and Morty (the director's very confusing way of talking in interviews didn't help). This doujin's author is just one of them. This is why having plurals around in the EN fandom explaining things was very helpful.

Translator here. Wouldn't have decided to translate it if I thought it portrayed DID and/or the Mutsumi system poorly.

Personally, I and a few other systems I know can relate to missing our headmates (alters), whether they've gone dormant, merged, lost their discreteness (sense of individuality/self), or faded away with time/trauma/whatever. Every system is different, just as every person is different, and that includes how they interpret what goes on in their system, and whether they feel the need to grieve dormant/changed/lost headmates. That said, from what I've heard from other systems it doesn't seem to be a common experience. So while I certainly wouldn't use this as an introduction to DID, I wouldn't call it bad representation.

Personally, I believe portraying DID more dramatically and tragically than in Ave Mujica is just as fine as portraying it more comedically and light-heartedly. Yes, Ave Mujica has received criticism for being very over-the-top with its horror, but I don't think we should be forced into writing DID or other disorders, neurodivergences, and marginalisations as if their main purpose is always to educate the masses, or only portray common experiences. Yes, we need a lot more realistic and light-hearted stories (e.g. the Pipe Up webcomic), but there's still a need for less-realistic, messy, and tragic stories, because I and many others find them relatable, comforting (in a sense), and of course entertaining.

In regards to canon, in a translated interview of a staff member, probably the director, discussing Mutsumi and Mortis' fates, they say "After this*, the one who begins playing the guitar is neither Mutsumi nor Mortis—nor a third personality. Instead, it’s a state where various “roles” cycle to adapt to situations." (https://pastebin.com/mk7WXfe7 but I don't know the source, sorry). From what I've heard, polyfragmented systems (systems with very many headmates) tend to be less stable and discrete than other systems, often switching frequently to whoever's best fit for the immediate situation. So, this doujin differs from canon in that this girl seems to be a somewhat discrete headmate.

Calling Mutsumi and Mortis "dead" is a highly distressing way to put it, and not accurate to canon (though it does fit thematically with Mortis' "I do not fear death"), but I do think it helps convey the weight of their absence on Nyamu and "Muuko" in this doujin. I find it comforting in that not only does it show Nyamu caring for Mutsumi and Mortis even if they were gone, it also shows Nyamu caring for and loving the whole Mutsumi system. I'll also point out that although they talk about death, it's not like those girls are gone entirely. This is generally also true in real life. She has a cheeky side just like Mortis, and next chapter she's shown to have a fondness for some of the things Mutsumi likes. As she said, they still remain as parts of her.

In summary, I understand that this doujin is distressing for some, and others might get the wrong impression of (most cases of) DID from this story. However, I personally found it very comforting, as I read it at a time when I wasn't sure if I was being overly sensitive or nonsensical for wanting to grieve for my lost headmates. So I wanted to translate it. It deviates from canon a bit, and it doesn't give the most hopeful impression of DID, but it personally moved me a lot.

Please note that these are just my own opinions, not the opinions of the doujin's author, nor the opinions of the plural community as a whole. You're totally free to dislike the story and disagree with what I've said. I just wanted to provide my own perspective on things.

Please look forward to the next chapter, although I'm very sorry to say it may take a while due to my chronic pain and many projects.

On an unrelated note, digitaldreams, the system who wrote up that very helpful thread on DID, also writes Ave Mujica fanfiction! They are massive fans of Mutsumi/Mortis. I love their stories so so SO much. Very heartwarming. So if you're feeling a bit sad after reading this I recommend looking through their stuff on AO3.
