I liked this because it's so over the top. Everything Bad Happens... because of BDSM and DRUGS!!! #SexDrugsandRock'n'Roll

People (me included -- and no, I don't use any, and I don't think you should treat actual addicts like shit either) are hung up on the drug depiction because the story IS about addiction, even if it's meant to symbolize something else (addiction to a person? It could have done that more effectively without the drugs.) And it's... addiction understood as this selfish individual act of irresponsibility that makes you have Dangerous Sex and accidentally kill your girlfriend. Come on, this is cartoonish. "woooow that is So fucked up!!!" <-- this is the reaction it's trying to elicit and I'm sorry I cannot turn my brain off to sit back and enjoy it for what it is. The drug use makes the whole thing look so exaggerated and silly that the salvageable parts (the emotional blackmail, the abuse) get muddied into that mess.

I did! Enjoy the drug-fueled sex scenes, because they looked so wrong and I love that kind of thing.

Comments on this one is crazy. Its like the Drug brigade is here to champion the cause of illegal substances in a society where they don’t even speak out about how casually women are assaulted there…

The "drug brigade" -- as opposed to the anti-drug brigade that have also been crawling over the comments?

Personally I barely even touch alcohol, let alone any currently illegal drugs, but I can recognize a stupid and corrupt drug war when I see one.

The drug war may be wholly ineffective, but please, PLEASE stop pretending that illegal drugs are fine and dandy. They are dangerous BECAUSE they are unregulated. There is NO safety involved. The police being corrupt doesn't make all crime virtuous.

Bro what is this propaganda lmao

Guaranteed the author has never touched anything harder than asahi beer in their life. I understand why it is this way but its such a shame every time something new drops in the drugs tag it's obviously written by someone who has no idea what they're talking about, if you'd believe it there are in fact plenty of people in Japan who use them in the rave scene. Still waiting for a yuri story with MDMA written by someone who has actually tried it, its my favorite fetish :(

That's entirely dependent on which drug is the thing. Alcohol and tobacco are more dangerous than a vast majority of illegal drugs. Yes, they should absolutely be legalized and regulated so people can be sure they're actually getting the substance and dosage they think they are, but realistically most illegal drugs are completely fine. MDMA and psychedelics are easily safer by far than alcohol and its not close. Opioids give other drugs a bad name.

why the fuck are you indirectly accusing people of being drug addicts

jesus christ this thread is a shitzone

Considering how defensive people here are about drug use and proclaiming to be so much more knowledgable than Suzuki, is such an accusation really such a stretch?

Maybe I missed something, but the MC mentioned after her first time just how meh the drugs felt. They weren't anything special, the issue was just her gf and herself already being at a low point and her fear of either of them getting arrested. The drugs could've easily been alcohol, choking isn't something you want to be doing without full control regardless what drug it is. But making it some vague pills acts as a red herring, because this is the "crime yuri anthology" so readers already know some kind of crime will be involved.

I align with the other critical commenters who mostly avoided engaging with the drug debate. Don't get me wrong, I think there's a LOT of correct political criticism to make about how the "drugs" in the oneshot are depicted, but, that isn't why I think the oneshot is bad. Manga can misrepresent real, heavy topics and still be good. I'm reading multiple series with child predator villains who are simply not like any real life child predator, and yet they are very well-written villains, for example. A good work of art uses realism as a tool like any other, and can make an unrealistic depiction work like a charm by leaning into its other narrative strengths.
The oneshot's just not good. Take out those drugs, replace them with something else. A shared hobby. A curse. It doesn't matter. There is no loss of realism, no necessary change to the mechanics of the plot, and crucially, the character and story arc is still mis-paced, full of flubbed emotional beats, and devoid of tension.
The drugs could have easily been alcohol. They could have easily been an evil book that makes you go crazy. You can tell that they're a poorly-integrated plot element in a poorly-written oneshot because there is nothing about them that makes them tie into the characters or themes in a compelling way. That's more or less why I think so many people interpreted this as a war on drugs PSA—the only message the drugs in the story seem to communicate is, "drugs bad," because, if they were ever meant to convey something more nuanced, the bluntness of the writing failed to.
That's my stance—whether the story was intended to be about how Drugs™️ make you have evil sex and die, or whether it was intended to be something more worthwhile, it ends up being the former, due to mundane artistic failure.
