I don't remember the early chapters that well, but this felt like a really explicit showing of Yoshiko's romantic interest in Hanayo. I thought it might have been more ambiguous before, but maybe I don't remember it that well.

I did not know this existed until today. I was excited at the prospect of an older women Yuri. Unfortunately this definitely isn't me. Yet another manga about how important it is to be feminine and pretty doesn't appeal to me. Even though I have been wanting a Yuri about older women.
Edit: Before anyone comes at me, I'm aware it's got some other lofty things, like the toxicity of her husband and downplaying the intelligence of women. Using conventional femininity as a basis to do so, all while forcing said femininity on women, but it must be the right kind of femininity. I fully understand that, trust me. However, it ultimately still presents this as the superior, maybe even more natural way for women to live. It just isn't for me.

I can definitely see where you're coming from; I just want to add a couple of things. Firstly, while I think that throwing out gendered beauty standards as a whole would be a powerful and helpful thing to do, it's also a huge jump for someone who has been operating under strict beauty standards her whole life. I think that makeup can be one tool, like a stepping stone, that can allow people to see that they can be beautiful, especially if they've never felt beautiful before.

Secondly, I think some women feel like they are forced into giving up their femininity as they age. Yes, femininity shouldn't be the most important thing in someone's life; I don't think any gender performance should consume someone entirely. But for a lot of us, it is an important part of how we perceive ourselves. So as far as I'm concerned, it can be healing to try something different. Clothes and makeup are ultimately only clothes and makeup. Our main character is using them to mend her relationship to herself and to the social world she inhabits. If she decided to dress more masculine to achieve the same result, I would be just as happy for her. I don't think she's being forced into anything here.

In fact, the latest chapter specifically brought up the difference between being forced to look a certain way and simply doing it to feel good about yourself.

My personal distaste for these narratives has nothing to do with if the characters are physically forced or not. It's from a much broader point of view. Pointing out how bad it is to force doesn't mean much if the end goal and result is the same. That this is often treated as the default mode of healing for women is ultimately my real critique. How they must feel good and confident about themselves. I won't lie. "I do it for me" always feels more like a cope that doesn't engage with broader society to me. Though like i said. It isn't for me, but if y'all like it, great. I'm glad it resonates with some people.

Personally I think how the characters feel in universe is an important part of the discussion. The general tone of the story and how it's framed are both also important. Yeah though it's better to not argue. Everyone has their own experiences and ways of engaging with the world and everything in it.

I think everyone in the conversation was valid in sharing their thoughts and views, as everyone has their own perspective and that's part of how discussion expands as people share. I personally can't say any singular person is objectively correct as I don't want to invalidate anyone in the discussion, and doing so feels very rude.

nah but fr I really like this manga and this chapter was great. Their relationship really seemed adapted to the times they lived (likely, the 80s, I guess? Or maybe even earlier?). Getting to know about her older loves and her older self also adds a lot to her character depth. I also really like how this manga is very subtle about everything, they never have to say explicitly what's happening, the characters never spell their actual desires or intentions precisely demonstrating how the world has shaped their views and ways on homosexuality.

I would like it even better if it got updated more regularly tho /j (or not?)

When you dismiss a yuri manga about women in their 60s because the apropos of their meeting was beauty, but with feminist sounding words. Bleak.

It's very common for manga about adult women to show the ways in which women navigate and negotiate their position in patriarchy, which includes beauty. I find it a little odd that you took issue with that in, of all things, a series about two lesbian women in their 60s.

You have the right to dislike any piece of fiction for any reason, but that does not mean the commentary where you express that dislike is insightful enough to be considered a "critique".

This might be my favorite current Yuri manga at this point, bar none. Excellent art, compelling characters, well written, completely different take on the classic genre archetypes.Just the fact that it's centered around older people with lots of baggage instead of high schoolers. Absolutely solid work all around.
