Aren't merfolk mammals? I've always seen them as half-cetacean people, but even if they really were half-fish they still have lungs and can breathe air.
Thus, in that case there's the possibility that they would need to switch mode between lungs and gills and Kagerou might be worried that she'd be unable to while unconscious from concussion.

Or something.
