^^ It's impossible to completely understand what happens starting from ch. 69 on, Kyoto trip and beyond, without reading from ch. 20, when Tomoko has the life-changing, soul-saving experience of meeting an angelic senior, Imae Megumi, who quietly watches over and helps her.
Megumi is essential for understanding the journey toward love and open-heartedness that Tomoko begins in the series. I can't stress this enough. The conclusion of the Megumi story marks a moment of self-awareness that resonates forward for our sad mess of a heroine. If you miss the series from ch. 20 on, you in some ways miss the series.
And there's no shortage of cringe later on.
