Blame it on Hollywood infecting Western and Western-influenced cultures with its stupid and highly unrealistic idealization of unhealthily thin female physiques.

Postwar Japan imported quite a bit of American culture and ran with it (example: consumerism). I wouldn't be surprised if the Hollywood thing I mentioned before was among that.
