Assuming you're using Photoshop, I think I'd suggest reading this little thing about typesetting. It talks about anti-aliasing some.

Yuri Project also has a smaller tutorial, though it's less graphic and more for general editing stuff.

Ive only ever used photoshop- and rarely the odd other package- and fonts are ALWAYS anti-aliased- I had no idea you could even make them none anti aliased- it looks so awful why would it ever be acceptable or wanted? Isnt it an ancient problem predating true type fonts? You shouldnt ever see the issue in modern systems/software?

Well, Photoshop CAN get your text non-antialiased if you select "None" in a combo box.
