Remember who Sophia is; I don't think that dynamic was there. She's mainly interested in getting her brother together with Bakarina. And that way, she gets to stay with Bakarina because she's with Nicol, which means the two women can read romance novels together as long as they live.

By the way, in Volume 4 of the light novel, there is considerable evidence that our heroine seriously loves Maria, including a kinda hot scene where she is actually self-aware of her feelings.

But the author will probably chicken out, of course.

What's happened so far is that both have gotten jealous of possible rivals, but the joke is that Momo and Shamiko are joined at the hip. They're not interested in someone else and won't be. If only they could confess, there would be no problem at all. As it's going, they may just collapse of emotional exhaustion from being incompetent at expressing their feelings. They're just kids.

^^^^ Actually, I think a friendship request may be a real ritual in Japan. It's basically a way to become friends when there's no natural way to do it, as the social situation stands, and the person making the request fears being importunate and going against the grain of social routine. So this girl admired Himawari, didn't know how else to become her friend, and reached out in a formal way.

In the anime Gamers there is a howlingly hilarious scene related to a friendship request.
