Here we go again:
I strongly recommend any prospective readers to start from the beginning of the series, and at least try to take in the entire story from its beginning. The development of Tomoko's character and even the evolution of the story's genre over time is the greatest aspect of the series. Cutting straight to the later chapters removes a lot of their impact when they aren't contextualized by where Tomoko came from.
If you have trouble getting through those early chapters, taking it slowly, chapter by chapter usually helps.
Ultimately, I don't blame anyone if they end up just really, really unable stand the beginning of the series and they decide to gloss over it. But again, at least give it a shot.
