I just don't get that whole tsundere resistance to affection, it seems self-destructive.

I do like pairing someone like that with Nozomi, who can either overpower or subvert her resistance as she sees fit.

Realistically, it's probably a response from being hurt by someone you let get too close before. You subconsciously withdraw from affection, because you don't want to let anyone else get close enough to betray your trust once more. Although in the case of anime, it's usually just some quick and shallow characterization.
