I got way behind in my newspaper, but I read the Lifeline sidebar in the March 16th edition of USA Today entitled "Making Waves."
NBC's upcoming reboot of "Xena: Warrior Princess' will make its heroine and sidekick Gabrielle a couple. "There's no reason to bring back Xena if it's not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication." said executive producer Javier Grill-Marxuach. The updated, openly gay "Xena" is due later this year.
This is the entirety of the article.
woohoo! subtext to full blown yuri. Can't wait.

Holy crap

I had no yuri goggles yet when I watched Xena as a kid, but now that I think about it...

It's so obvious!

Oh wow, I regret not having watched the original series when I was young now. Guess that'll be my homework.
Also, after checking things out on the Google™, they're definitely gay. Even the actress who played Xena confirmed it.
Lawless (Xena's actress) stated that after the series finale—in which Gabrielle revives Xena with a mouth-to-mouth water transfer and filmed to look like a full kiss—she had come to believe that Xena's and Gabrielle's relationship was "definitely gay... there was always a 'well, she might be or she might not be' but when there was that drip of water passing between their lips in the very final scene, that cemented it for me. Now it wasn't just that Xena was bisexual and kinda liked her gal pal and they kind of fooled around sometimes, it was 'Nope, they're married, man'."
I really missed out on something good. Shame on me.

Good news, 'cause that show kinda aged badly, in my opinion. So would be all for a modern version, especially if they go fully open on their relationship.

I kinda like that it's aged. I get a real kick out of re-watching that breed of 90s/early 00s dorky sci-fi / fantasy / thriller nonsense. Xena, Lexx, La Femme Nikita, Jack of All Trades etc.

Cementing Xena x Gabrielle as canon is a lovely thing to do, though I'm unsure if I can go back to that well after so many years. Xena's place in my heart revolves around web 1.0 sites full of fanfiction and subtext analysis, and sailing the ship almost feels like erasing that little footnote of history.

Still, that's like being nostalgic for the war after victory. I hope this new Xena makes a few old dreams come true.

Personally never excited about right-up-regurgitated.. I mean, "reboots" of stuff that plagues today's media. Even tho I never saw the original... this one... got my interest.

I watched a bit of the original back in the day. Do I remember anything in particular? NOPE...but I think I liked it. I also had the Ps1 game...and I don't remember liking it. A-Anyway...I know I'll watch this one.
