There's a strong tendency (and Miyazaki complained about this) for anime and manga artists to copy what other anime and manga artists are doing, and few of them go back to taking inspiration from real people instead. Which leads to a lot of stuff within a genre looking very much alike. A lot of moe characters could switch shows and hardly anyone would notice, same for shounen, shoujo, etc. I see a lot of previews for Visual Novels and honestly can't tell them apart (there are exceptions thankfully). And very few of any of those seem to refer back to humans, the way this does.
