I don't think they're particularly stupid looking, but whew boy I feel extremely uncomfortable whenever I see them cause I get paranoid about them getting caught on something. A friend of mine can also tell you that they absolutely do not mesh well with holding a grabby baby.

I continue to believe that this whole subplot started off as editorial meddling, but Takashima-sensei prevailed and is now course-correcting as best they can.

Realistically it's probably that the author had a idea and flubbed the execution and is now trying to tweak it based on feedback. There are many ways this same general plot could have happened and actually been decent.

Given the bad things typically only happen when the player makes them happen, I don't think you'll have to worry. I think the worst that will happen is nothing happens between them.
